Lord, you know the hopes of the helpless. Surely you will hear their cries and comfort them ~ Psalm 10:17

There are many people in this world who feel helpless, helpless to help others, and sometimes even feel their own life is helpless. For someone to feel helpless they must be at their very lowest emotionally, and that is awful.

In the above verse from Psalm the says “surely you will hear their cries and comfort them”, well I’d like to change those words to more positive ones by saying

God will hear their cries and He will comfort them

It’s not a case of whether God will comfort them or not, because that is never in doubt, because God has promised to be with us and help us always. So if you feel your life is helpless or you feel helpless to help others, don’t despair, because God will hear your prayers and will help.

Broken and Beautiful by Brian Doerksen

Lord we remember
How You gave Your life on a brutal cross
Lord we remember
This is the way You’ve chosen to say
This is the way You make all things new
This is the way You’ve chosen to say
This is the way You make all things new
Broken and beautiful
Extravagant love
Prodigal grace
Broken and beautiful
God‘s perfect justice
Mercies embraced

What do you think of when yu think a Jesus on a cross at Calvary?

Well the name of the above song sums it up quite well doesn’t it…Broken and Beautiful.

Broken by humanity but also providing us with beautiful peace and mercy forever.

Don’t ever forget the beauty of the cross and all it stands for!

No matter what you might be facing right now or what comes up in the future, remember two things: God is with you—and He’s in control. ~ Joyce Meyer

Life can really be tough at times, and it can feel as if no-one cares about us. However it’s then we must remind ourselves that someone does care about us…God cares about us, and is always here with us, and He’s calling us to trust in Him.

Have you put your full trust in God?

People come and go in our lives, some tell us they’ll always be there for us, then when things get tough they desert us. Other’s never promise us anything, but are always there when we need someone to talk to or a shoulder to cry on.

I’m sure as you’ve read my last couple of sentences, certain people in your life have come into your mind – Some maybe reminding you of some warm loving and comforting times, others maybe of a time when you’ve been deeply hurt or let down.

But as I’ve mentioned before in previous blog posts, there is one person who comes highly recommended who I can assure you will never let you down, regardless of when you need them or how often you call them…and that person is God!

God will always be there for you no matter where you are, no matter when you need Him, no matter how frequently you need Him. In other words, God will be there for you no matter what!

Yesterday in A New Spiritual Start I asked you at the start of this new year, to consider refocusing your spiritual life. But how do we go about refocusing our life on God?

Refiner’s Fire

Purify my heart
Let me be as gold and precious silver
Purify my heart
Let me be as gold, pure gold
Refiner’s fire
My heart’s one desire
Is to be holy
Set apart for You, Lord
I choose to be holy
Set apart for You, my Master
Ready to do Your will
Purify my heart
Cleanse me from within
And make me holy
Purify my heart
Cleanse me from my sin
Deep within

Well first and foremost, as the words of the above song suggest, we must choose to be holy and in choosing to be holy we must be willing to set ourselves apart for God.

Secondly we must give our all to God, so that He can cleanse me from within and make me holy. We can’t truly dedicate ourselves to God if we keep part of ourselves from Him.

Philippians 3:15-16 (The Message)

So let’s keep focused on that goal, those of us who want everything God has for us. If any of you have something else in mind, something less than total commitment, God will clear your blurred vision—you’ll see it yet! Now that we’re on the right track, let’s stay on it.

So what now? Pray!

The main way to ask God into your life is to get down on your knees and pray to God, a prayer from deep in your heart. A prayer of sincerity, a prayer of compassion, commitment and dedication to Him.

God will hear your pray, and He will purify your heart.

A couple of days ago, in Welcome to 2012, I listed my aims for 2012, some related to my physical wellbeing, others to my spiritual well-being.

As this is a new calendar year, I’d urge you to not only refocus your aims for your life, but also to refocus your spiritual life. Whether that means giving your life to God for the first time, or whether you’re rededicating your life to God, this is a perfect time to restart your Christian journey.

Maybe last year you felt God was calling you to move your life in a particular direction, but you kept telling Him that wasn’t what you wanted. It’s not too late to say “yes” to God’s call today. God has your life planned out before you, He just needs you to follow. Don’t think you can’t achieve what He asks you to do, because He will always be there to help you and give you the words and actions to see you through whatever comes your way.

Maybe you’ve found your life getting out of control and you feel there’s no point carrying on. There’s always a point continuing with life! God gave us life, and therefore He can help you regain control of your life again. All you have to do is ask Him to come into your life and take control.

Maybe you’ve never even given God a second thought, as you’ve always felt there was nothing He could do for you. Why not give God a chance today. He can and will make a positive difference in your life…a difference that others will be able to see.

Those are just a few examples of how you might be feeling about your life and God. So however you might be feeling today either about your life, or about God, I would urge you at the start of this new year, to give God a chance to change your life for the better.

Make your 2012 a God-focused year. Go on ask God into your life today.

If I asked you to list five things that mean everything to you, what would you say?

I’d guess that most of us would list at least some of the following:

  • Family
  • Money
  • Friendships
  • Health
  • Holidays
  • Home
  • Job

What other things might you include in your list?

My list would most definitely include some of the above, family, friendships, home, health, but my list would definitely also include my faith.

If your list wouldn’t include your faith, is it because you do not believe in God, or have you simply listed worldly things that mean everything to you and missed out/forgot about God? Whatever your reason, I challenge you today to consider the difference you would experience in your life if God was your everything.

2 Corinthians 9:8 (NIV)

And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.

God can and will make a difference in your life, all you have to do is love Him, and give the whole of you to Him.

This week, in various blog posts, I’ve referred to us celebrating harvest last weekend at Bellshill Salvation Army, but do you actually know what that means?

Here’s one definition I found:

Harvest Festival is a celebration of the food grown on the land. Harvest Festivals remind Christians of all the good things God gives them. This makes them want to share with others who are not so fortunate. In schools and in Churches, people bring food from home to a Harvest Festival Service. After the service, the food that has been put on display is usually made into parcels and given to people in need.

These days we don’t talk about “harvesting the crops” like they used to in the past, because we live in more urban communities where we rarely see crops let alone consider when they need to be harvested. However in the past, when the crops were gathered in. it was customary to give the best of the crops to God. The best crops are normally the first ones gathered.

Exodus 23:16 (NIV)

Celebrate the Feast of Harvest with the firstfruits of the crops you sow in your field.

So that’s what harvest festivals are all about. But what about us, what does God expect from us, His people, at harvest?

Well, as was mentioned in the definition above, it’s a chance for us to bring food to our harvest festival so that it can later be passed out to the needy in our communities. But it’s also much more than that, it’s a chance for us to say thank you to God again, for all He gives us each day.

We live in a world where we’re all so busy rushing around all the time that I suspect if you’re anything like me, you forget to say thank you to God for the all He provides for us. I’m not talking about all the complicated things in life, but the basics, things like food, water, a home, clothes, our education, our family and friends…and then theirs the world around us, the rivers, trees, flowers, plants, hills…

How many of those things I’ve just listed have you thanked God for recently?

Take time out this Harvest to just say “thank you” to God for all the things we have in life, the things that we so often take for granted.

We often hear people saying that we

should cherish the children because they are the future

…but are they?

Personally I don’t agree with this statement. Does that surprise you? It may not surprise you quite as much when I tell you why I disagree with this statement…

For me we must cherish the children because they are the present as well as the future!

Yes, until the children are grown up they may not be able to have the impact on our community and society that we would hope, however if we don’t teach them in God‘s ways when they are children, they will never be the adults we, or God need and want them to be.

Deuteronomy 10:12 (NIV)

what does the LORD your God ask of you but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul

1 Corinthians 10:12-14 (NIV)

So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall! No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.

In the last few days I’ve spoken about how we must be faithful to God, but what we should never forget is that God is always faithful to us – He will never leave our side or forget about us, but more importantly He will never burden us with more than He knows we can cope with. Yes it might be tough for at times for us, but God knows just how many struggles/difficulties we can cope with at any time – After all He never expects us to cope on our own.

So if you’re feeling like you’ve too many burdens/problems to deal with at present, think again…have you taken them to God? God will never let you carry more than you can cope with, so take your problems/burdens to God, as He will be faithdul to you, and will lighten your load.

I hope you enjoy Brian Doerksen singing Faithful Father – a great inspirational song of worship:
