Unlit Candle

Proverbs 20:27

The spirit of man is the candle of the Lord

Anyone who proclaims to be a Christian, is as the bible tells us in Proverbs (see above) is a candle shining in this dark world. Without God, we are like an unlit candle, however even if we know God it’s up to us to light our candle. If we are an unlit candle we are useless to God, as we are not spreading the light of His word in this world.

Candles come in all shapes, sizes and colours. Their purpose is to provide light and brighten the area where they are, but if a candle has never burned it has never given a ray of light to dispel the darkness, so is virtually useless. Unlit candles cannot show the way up or down a staircase or emit light from a window. In other words an unlit candle is of little use.

In a similar way, some Christians are just like unlit candles –  They do not let their light shine in the midst of this frightening and dark world that is dying for lack of Light. Some never brighten anyone’s day; never lighten someone’s path to keep them from stumbling in the dark; never reach out to someone who is looking for someone to lift them up. God told us to let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

We must let our light shine in this dark world so that those in darkness will see that light and our good deeds and therefore be led to the Light, to Jesus Christ.
