You’ve started reading the bible and you’re trying to understand what it says, but you’re finding it hard to understand just what God is trying to tell you through His word…don’t despair, this is only natural. God does not expect us to understand everything He is trying to tell us, He expects us to need guidance from Him. So, I thought I’d give you a few more pointers on how to study the bible, based on my own experiences.

Pray for Guidance

I’m sure like me, you’ll read verses in the bible which don’t make any sense to you. Just because you don’t understand them does not mean they these verses are not relevant to you. In fact from my own experience, I’ve often found it’s the verses I don’t understand, that in time, come to be those that speak most to me.

To understand the bible, we can’t do it alone, we need to ask God for guidance. In other words, we must pray.

John 16:13 (NKJV)
However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.

Although me must pray, we must not expect God to respond to our request immediately, we must be patient.

…and there’s the important part, “we must be patient“. He may not answer our request, immediately, or even today or tomorrow, ir may be weeks before He gives you the guidance you requested. The thing to remember thought, is that even when God answers our request for guidance, He may do so in a way we are not even aware. e.g. Through a conversation someone has with us, a situation or event that happens etc. However, at the end of the day, we can always be assured that God will answer our request for guidance and understanding of His word.

God Will Speak To You

2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NIV)
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

The bible was written by people inspired by God. It is God’s word. It is God’s instruction book for living. It is God’s personal instruction book for each one of us.

As I’ve said in many previous blog posts, prayer is a critical and essential part of our Christian life, and so is the bible. Use it as your personal guide to life. Your personal instruction book from God.
