A couple of nights ago a watched a film called The Joneses. It was billed as a comedy, but personally I didn’t find it very funny…in fact it highlighted to me just how much we are all influenced by advertising:

A seemingly perfect family moves into a suburban neighbourhood, but when it comes to the truth as to why they’re living there, they don’t exactly come clean with their neighbours. The family are in fact not a real family, they are in fact sales people for a marketing company, and have been brought together as a “family” to subliminally sell their perfect lifestyle and products to their neighbours.

The most poignant part of the film is when one of Steve Joneses neighbours having spent a lot of money buying many of the items Steve has, finds he’s unable to pay his bills any longer because of how much money he’s spent, and so commits suicide.

Sadly this is what can often happen in real life, people see so many adverts and are encouraged to buys things they can’t afford and don’t really need. Many of them then end up in financial difficulty just like in the film. Fortunately however not all take the step of actually taking their own life, many live in poverty, while others struggle and fight to get themself out of their money problems.

Don’t get sucked in by the gloss, glam and excitement of adverts, try and make sure you don’t spend money you simply don’t have, or can’t afford to miss.
