The Tooth Fairy, the Easter Bunny, and Santa Claus a fun and harmless fiction, or a pointless justification for lying to children?

We try to raise our children to know the difference between right and wrong, truth and lies, and yet during their formative years we lie to them without a second thought by telling them wonderful, elaborate stories of, for example, how Santa manages to get into our houses when we have no chimney without forcing entry into our homes. Doesn’t it all sound quite farfetched when you read it like think?!

Don’t misunderstand me, I’m not actually saying I disagree with us creating a bit of mystery and magic in our children’s lives, as after all life can be full of hardships and struggles, that a little good luck and mystery isn’t necessarily bad is it?

I do however think we must be careful just how far we take these magical stories so that we can easily explain the difference between reality and make-believe when our children get to an age when they can understand the difference between these two things.

What are your thoughts on this?

Sadly while looking for some pictures to use with this blog post I have come across a number of pictures which suggested the that God and Christ should also be added to this list of make-believe people. That I find very sad and quite upsetting. It just reminds me that we as Christians have a huge job on our hands to educate and teach the world that not everything we cannot see is fake.

God isn’t harmless fiction, He is real and He is Lord, so let’s educate the world this Christmas.
