How well do you know yourself?

How well do you think others know you?

I guess we all probably think differently about ourselves than others do, and we’re probably our worst critics aren’t we! That’s why the following is a great reminder:

You are not what others think you are. You are what God knows you are ~ Shannon L. Alder

Let the storms of today make you stronger for tomorrow

When you’re struggling to get through a day and everything seems to be going against you it can be hard to accept that something good can come out of today can’t it?

Just as our bodies can only build immunity against illnesses by fighting against those bugs/illnesses, we gain strength to face tomorrow by learning from the difficulties we face in life. So stay strong, because you can face whatever tomorrow brings, head on.

Are you looking for simple ways to encourage your heart and nourish your soul?

In the last while I’ve given you some ideas which will hopefully inspire you to implement them in your own life, and over the coming weeks I’ll share some others with you.

So here’s today’s suggestion:

Connect with others

We shouldn’t need a reason to ask our friends and acquaintances how they are, so today’s suggestion to brighten your day, is to simply ask others how they are!

Let this simple act of asking others how they are, remind you that this small act could be the huge lift that person may be needing today. We never truly know how those we see or talk to each day, really are – some may be facing health problems, depression, have financial concerns, worried about family members or lonely – so by simply asking them how they are, will prove to them that someone loves them and cares for them, and that is a powerful message.

Brighten your day by brightening someone else’s day!

More than a trip

Do you go to church?

If so, do you go out of habit, is it just some time out with your family, or do you go to praise and worship God and be refreshed with His spirit so you can face the coming week?

I think this quote from Joyce Meyer sums up the reason we should go to church:

Let me tell you that God has a lot more for you than just a weekly trip to church. He wants you to learn how to do life with Him

So go to church, but make sure you leave it having learned more about God and how to live your life with Him at the centre of it.

I’ve done a few Word Associations with you over the last while, and today it’s time for another one. So as usual I’m going to throw some words at you  and I want you to note down the first word that comes into your mind when you read each word.

So here goes…

  1. wordsShoe
  2. Headphones
  3. Hairdresser
  4. Spreadsheet
  5. Love
  6. Heater
  7. Dishes
  8. Remote
  9. Paper
  10. Black

So how did you get on with those words? Did you find it easy? Did your answers surprise you or were they just as you expected?

Well here’s my responses to my questions:

  1. Small
  2. Music
  3. Style
  4. Format
  5. Family
  6. Winter
  7. Food
  8. Control
  9. Plane
  10. Bag

Were any of your answers the same as mine? Did any of my answers confuse you? Did any of your own answers confuse you?

I’ve said in previous word association posts that I find I get a bit stressed when I’m doing them as I put a lot of pressure on myself not to over think my answers! Are you relaxed when you do them or do you find it stressful too?

I still believe that when we respond with the first words that come into our minds, our answers tell us a lot about our emotional state, and what’s important to us at that particular point in time.

Bearing all this in mind, review your answers, does my theory hold true?

By the way, if you want me to explain any of my answers, just ask!

When life gets stormy, don’t curse the storm. Instead take advantage of the storm to test your resolve and challenge your own strength, because it’s through grace that we can survive the storm.

In Deuteronomy 31:6 (ESV) we are told:

Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.

Do we understand why God continues to make us face difficulties?

Our difficulties make us who we are, by giving us scars…not necessarily physical scars but emotional and spiritual scars which remind us of those times and hopefully remind us that it was through God’s help we got through those difficulties stronger than we were before.

So stay strong, because whatever you’re going through today will make you stronger tomorrow.

Don’t fear #3

Today I want to use the same bible verses as yesterday, but this time using The Message translation:

Don’t be afraid, I’ve redeemed you. I’ve called your name. You’re mine. When you’re in over your head, I’ll be there with you. When you’re in rough waters, you will not go down. When you’re between a rock and a hard place, it won’t be a dead end—Because I am God, your personal God, The Holy of Israel, your Saviour. (Isaiah 43:1-3 The Message)

Living in the 21st century can be very stressful at times, but we should not fear because God is with us. But what is causing you to fear?

Whatever makes you fear, give it to God and believe that He can and will give you strength to overcome it, and know that because God is with you, love is in your life. Let His perfect love cast out your fears so that you can truly experience power that only He can give you to fulfill your purpose in life.

So whenever you become fearful remember His words to you: “Fear not.”

Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; You are Mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; And through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, Nor shall the flame scorch you. For I am the LORD your God, The Holy One of Israel, your Saviour (Isaiah 43:1-3 NKJV)

These words are just as true for us today as they were for those that God first said them to.

God says he will be with us no matter what we face, and so we too must be there to encourage and help one another. We must also ensure we work together for God, to share God’s love with those who don’t know Jesus.

It can be difficult to support one another during tough times, and it can be equally difficult to stand up for God when all around want nothing to do with Him, but there’s no need to fearful of how we can do either of these things, as God has said “I will be with you“.

Are you looking for simple ways to encourage your heart and nourish your soul?

In the last while I’ve given you some ideas which will hopefully inspire you to implement them in your own life, and over the coming weeks I’ll share some others with you.

So here’s today’s suggestion:

Don’t let stress take over your sleep

I know this blog post is about brightening your day and my suggestion for today is about the middle of the night, but technically that is part of your day!

I’m sure we’ve all had a few nights when either we’ve struggled to fall asleep in the first place, or we’ve slept for a few hours and then woken up and been unable to get back to sleep again because our minds are focusing on all the stresses and strains of life, which in turn makes it impossible for our minds to be at rest so we can sleep. So instead of letting those stressing thoughts take over our minds when we can’t sleep, why not get up and make better use of your sleepless time, by reading, meditating or praying. i.e. do some of the things you struggle to find time to do during the daytime.

If you’re awake during the night, make good use of the time instead of stressing about things which, in the cold light of day, will not seem nearly as bad.
