Philippians 4:6-7 (The Passion Translation)

Don’t be pulled in different directions or worried about a thing. Be saturated in prayer throughout each day, offering your faith-filled requests before God with overflowing gratitude. Tell him every detail of your life, then God’s wonderful peace that transcends human understanding, will make the answers known to you through Jesus Christ.

Life can be incredibly tough at times, because as the above bible verses say, we can be ‘pulled in different directions’, with many people expecting or wanting something from us.

Whenever I find myself getting stressed about life, I remind myself that God is with me, and then read these verses from Philippians again, as they reassure me that God will guide me through those difficulties.

So be strong, and stay faithful, because God is always faithful to you.

We all have times in our life when we face challenges. e.g. the death of a loved one, unemployment, serious illness. Based on some of the things I’ve learned about myself and from talking to others, I want to share with you some things to think about when you’re facing some tough situations. I hope you find this helpful:

Admit you’re struggling

You may not realise just how much you’re struggling. However I’m sure your family or friends will have noticed a difference in you. So if someone asks you if you’re ok, don’t just say ‘yes’ really look at yourself, and be honest with yourself. After all, if you don’t know you’re struggling or in trouble, how can you start to help yourself?

Don’t hide

When you’re struggling you’ll probably feel like you want to hide away from everyone in a darkened room or in a corner. That is one of the worst things you could do! The best way to keep your emotions under control when you’re struggling is actually to keep busy. When you’re busy there’s more chance you’ll focus on the task in hand instead of continually thinking about all your problems, as that will bring you down even more.

Say ‘No’

Are you the kind of person who always says ‘yes’ when someone asks you to do something? If you are, this one might be very difficult for you, but please consider it as I believe it really is quite uplifting to say ‘No’ sometimes. You may be struggling to do everything you’re already trying to do. So remember you do not need to do everything you’re asked to do. So say ‘No’, and use that extra time to take control of your life and your emotions.

Help

You probably think I’m just suggesting you seek help for yourself from either a friend or a help care professional, however I’m also suggesting you also help others too. One of the times I was struggling, I discovered a friend was also going through a really tough time and I definitely found that by talking with them, and trying to help them, it helped me focus on someone else’s problems instead of my own. Being able to offer support and help to someone else raised my spirits, as it showed me I was still useful and helpful to someone. So speak to others about how you’re feeling, as you may be surprised to find they too may be going through a difficult time and would be grateful for your support too.

Trust

This may be my final suggestion, but it is in fact the most important one – Trust God! God is with us all the time even when we ignore him or forget him. God will always answer your prayers – Maybe not today or tomorrow, but he’ll answer them. Maybe not in the way you wanted or expected, but he will answer your prayer. So trust Him! Believe in God!

Press pause

Whatever you may be going through, pause, take a deep breath and remember that God is faithful!

This is a great reminder isn’t it, because often when we’re going through some tough times, it can be so easy to think God has deserted you just because he’s not answering your prayers the way you want. So just press the pause button on your life for a minute, and remind yourself

  • God  is there for you, always!
  • God will answer your prayers, but he’ll do so in his time, and in his own way.

It seems these days that we experience more and more storms now than we did in the past. Maybe it just seems this way because they have started naming our storms, whereas in the past, we just said we were having windy/wet weather and just got on with it?!

When it comes to storms or difficult times in our life, do you find you are experiencing more or less storms now than you did in the past?

Personally I’d say I am experiencing far more storms in my life now, as until a number of years ago I’m not sure I could really class any of the difficulties I experienced as storms, as looking back on them they were definitely just damp days! The difference now is that my faith is stronger now than it has ever been, and that is all because when I was at my lowest a number of years ago, I know God looked out for me, and He kept me going, and kept me fighting until I came through the storm.

Maybe you’re feeling on top of the world just now, maybe you’re at our lowest point. Whichever you find yourself in, just remember God is always with you, even when you find it hard to believe you’re still struggling through a storm of life.

When you’re going through a tough period of time, it really can feel like you are completely on your on – Not necessarily that there’s no one living with you or around you day-to-day, but no one really understands how you feel, or even seems to care how you feel.

Maybe you’re being told to “give yourself a shake” or “things aren’t that bad”, but both those statements (plus others) are not helpful when you feel at rock bottom.

I have found in those situations that even at night when I tried to sleep, my mind was constantly active reiterating to me how hopeless things were, or how bad things looked. This usually resulted in me not getting much sleep, which in turn made it more difficult to concentrate on standard everyday tasks, again making it feel like I couldn’t do anything right anymore.

Hang on in there though, as even through those difficult times, God is still by your side. It may not feel like he is, but I can assure you he is always there, and will help you during those days. You probably won’t realise during those times that God is helping you, but believe me when you get through that time, you’ll look back and you’ll see God’s part your survival.

So keep on believing God is with you, as he will help you through your storm.

Keep the Candle Burning by Point of Grace

You think you’re alone there in your silent storm
But I’ve seen the tears you’ve cried falling down and trying to drown
The flame of hope inside
Let me tell you now, tell you now
When you’re walking in the dead of night
And your soul is churning
When your hope seems out of sight
Keep the candle burning
All it takes is one steady heart in a world that’s turning
Shine a light and pierce the dark
Keep the candle burning
Keep the candle burning
When you’re down and you’re discouraged
When the darkness clouds your view
You’ve got to gather up your courage
You know the lord is gonna see you through
Let me tell you now
Tell you now
One ray of light always breaks through
Follow wherever he takes you
Wherever he takes you

I’ve done a few Word Associations with you over the last while, and today it’s time for another one. So as usual I’m going to throw some words at you, and I want you to note down the first word that comes into your mind when you read each word.

So here goes…

  1. Patrol
  2. Word
  3. Perfect
  4. Belief
  5. Fish
  6. Ocean
  7. Hair
  8. Glass
  9. Orchid
  10. Heater

wordsSo how did you get on with those words? Did you find it easy? Did your answers surprise you or were they just as you expected?

Well here’s my responses to my questions:

  1. Police
  2. Dictionary
  3. Mistake
  4. God
  5. Chippy
  6. Disaster
  7. Colour
  8. Eyes
  9. Christmas
  10. Gas

I still believe that when we respond with the first words that come into our minds, our answers tell us a lot about our emotional state, and what’s important to us at that particular point in time.

Bearing all this in mind, review your answers, does my theory hold true?

By the way, if you want me to explain any of my answers, just ask!

How far would you go to help someone you love? Would you do anything and everything in your power to help them? I’m sure you would.

But if it were someone you didn’t know, but you knew they needed help, would you do anything for them?

Here’s what God wants us to do:

God would do anything for you, that’s why he gave his only son. So let’s make sure we do anything and everything to help those who need help.

Do you find it easy to pray?

Do your words flow in coherent sentences when you pray, or do you find it hard to vocalise your prayers, to tell God what’s on your mind or heavy on your heart?

It doesn’t matter how, when or where we pray. God hears every prayer, and understands what is on our mind and in our heart even before we know it ourselves.

As this quote from Max Lucado reminds us, thankfully how well we vocalise our prayers doesn’t matter because God understands them, and answers them.

There are people we come across in our lives will tell us our beliefs and opinions are wrong. Should we be upset or annoyed by this?

I believe we shouldn’t be, however I realise that makes it sound as if it’s very easy to ignore other people’s opinions of us, when in fact it can be very difficult particularly when they hurt and upset us.

God is crazy about you. He made you . He made you the unique person you are today. So believe Him when he says he’ll always be there for you because he loves you.

As I said yesterday, some people may think we’re crazy because we believe in God. It’s ok to be crazy about God, because he’s actually crazy about us too!

When you love someone, what do you do? Do you keep a picture of them on your phone, and give them gifts to show how much you love them? Well image God did the same kind of things so show us how much he loves us.

Remember God has shown us just how much he loves us…
