Singing

When you hear someone singing does it make you feel happy. People often sing when they feel happy. For example a child singing a tune to themselves as they play; or an adult singing their favourite songs in the shower.

If this is true, shouldn’t we all be singing about Jesus all the time because Jesus makes us happy?

Today in the UK it is Mother’s Day or Mothering Sunday. It is always celebrated on the 4th Sunday of Lent, exactly 3 weeks before Easter.

Although these days today is seen as a day for celebrating our mothers and all they do for us. It was traditionally a day when people returned to their ‘mother’ church. The place they were baptised, or the parish where they grew up and were nurtured in faith and where people cared for them as they grew up.

I wonder who those people were for you? A family member, a member of your church, maybe your mother.

For those whose mothers have passed away, Mother’s Day can be a difficult day. While for those who have children, it can be a joyful occasion where their family celebrate all mother does for them.

I must admit, while it’s great to celebrate the life of our mothers, there always seems to me to be little consideration given to those whose mother’s have passed away, those mother’s who have lost a child, and those who would love to be mothers but it either has never happened for them, or other reasons have prevented them from having a family.

However you feel about celebrating Mother’s Day today, I pray that whether it be celebrating with your mother, celebrating with your family, or simply remembering your mother or child who have passed away, that you find some joy from your time with family, or remembering those loved ones who are no longer with us.

I recently had to pass on some information to someone, which in itself is not unusual. However I was unsure how they were going to respond to what I had to tell them – I expected them to be concerned or worried about what this would mean for them.

Well the reaction I got took me completely by surprise – They were surprised and excited by what I told them! How wrong was I about how they would feel about what I had to tell them!

That’s often the case though isn’t it – The things we stress and worry about can often turn out to be not nearly as bad we had imaged. Sometimes however they do turn out to be as difficult or as bad as we imagines. In all circumstances, that’s why we must take all our problems and our worries to God and leave them in His hands, as He will help you through.

Heaven can heal

Come out of sadness
From wherever you’ve been
Come broken hearted
Let rescue begin
Come find your mercy
Oh sinner come kneel
Earth has no sorrow
That heaven can’t heal
Earth has no sorrow
That heaven can’t heal

Aren’t these reassuring words? – “Earth has no sorrow that heaven can’t heal”.

So no matter how much sorrow we have to endure, or how much pain physical or emotional pain we have to go through, God can, and will heal us. But how do we do that?

So lay down your burdens
Lay down your shame
All who are broken
Lift up your face
Oh wanderer come home
You’re not too far
So lay down your hurt
Lay down your heart
Come as you are

So even if you feel broken, or you turned away from God many years ago, God still wants you to come to Him because He still loves you. Come to Him now, just as you are, and leave your pain and hurt with Him.

Life can be hard to cope with at times, particularly when we have a number of difficult or stressful situations to deal with at the same time.

The best way to cope when you’re stressed or struggling to deal with life issues is to give all your stresses and problems to God and let Him take care of all of them. That’s easy to say, but can be incredibly difficult do because when we’re going through a tough time we can forget to pray, thinking God has abandoned us. The worst thing is, it’s during these times that we need God most.

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. (Matthew 11:28 – King James Version)

Be assured that God will give you all you need when life gets tough. Give all your problems to God today.

Come just as you are by Sydney Staff Songsters

How many people do you know who would accept you just as you are?

How many people do you know who you would accept just as they are?

There is of course one person who accepts each of us, just as we are. In fact He encourages us to come, just as we are. It is of course God.

In the bible we read how Jesus encouraged everyone to come to him, with all their problems and worries:

Are you weary, carrying a heavy burden? Then come to me. I will refresh your life, for I am your oasis. ~ Matthew 11:28 (The Passion Translation)

Jesus encourage everyone to come to him because he could provide the nourishment and help we each need. Who else can do that! Therefore no matter what your need, or what problems you face, come to God, because He can and will help you.

What does God deserve from us? Our time when we’ve nothing else to do; Our heart or just the bit of us we think we can spare?

That’s not what God wants or even what He deserves from us. He deserves every part of our life, every problem, every feeling, every thought, all there is of us.

We live in a time where many believe there are no such things a miracles. However, you’ll still find people saying things such as

  • “It’s a miracle I got home in one piece”
  • “We need a miracle to get this job completed on time”

Those aren’t really real miracles that are being reference here are they, they are simply figures of speech.

There may be a lack of belief that miracles still happen these days, but I believe they do. For example

  • People who are terminally ill who not only don’t die, but find they have no trace of the terminal illness any more.
  • People who suffer from alcohol or drug abuse, but through the influence and guidance of someone who tries to help them, realise God loves them, and so turn their life around by giving their life to God.

The One who made the blind to see
Is moving here in front of me, moving here in front of me
The One who made the deaf to hear
Is silencing my every fear, silencing my every fear

The One who does impossible is
Reaching out to make me whole
The One who put death in its place
His life is flowing through my veins

These are just a couple of examples of true miracles. I’m sure you can see evidence of God performing miracles all around you.

Do you stand up for what you believe in or do you keep quiet to keep the peace?

When we believe in God, we must stand up for Him and stand up against wrong.

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armour of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. ~ Ephesians 6:10-11 (NIV)

When we are see or hear things which are wrong, we have the best person supporting us to help us stand up for what is right. As these verses from Ephesians remind us, God will help us to stand against all that is wrong or evil. All we have to do is put our full trust in Him., and He will shield us and guide us through life.

Imagine you had no constraints. i.e. Money is no issue, you have no time constraints, no responsibilities, no health issues. In other words you can go where you want, what you want, when you want. So what would you do, where would you go?

Would you go on holiday?

Perhaps you’d buy yourself a new car or a new house?

Maybe you’d learn to do something you’ve never had the time or the money to do before, such as learning to fly a plane?

Even if you have unlimited resources, it doesn’t mean they will last forever. So whether you have little money or lots of money, have lots of health concerns or as healthy as you could be, have family or work responsibilities or on your own and unemployed, we still need to look after what we have.

We need to take care of ourselves, our possessions, our friends and family, and make sure we use our time wisely.
