…who do you turn to?

…who do you choose?

Friends and family may do their best to support and help us when we struggle with life issues, but they never really know or understand just how we feel unless they have been through the exact same experiences as us.

God however knows every part of us – he knows our thoughts and our feelings even before we know or comprehend them ourselves. Therefore, God is the only person we can confidently say we can rely on to understand our every feeling and emotion. So choose God as your confidant, as he will love and support you through every difficult life situation.

When at school no matter how good I was at sports, I was always one of the last people to picked to be in a team during the sports lessons (though I was picked in the school teams). I never quite got that at the time, as I was always quite good at racket sports, football, volleyball etc, but still never got picked until there was nobody else left. Looking back these days, I now realise that while maybe my focus would have been on picking people to help my team win, others were simply picking their friends to be in their team, and that explains why I was always left to the end!

While I may not have been chosen to be part of a team chosen by my so-called fiends, and that hurt, I do know that I have still been chosen.

Ephesians 1:4-6 (The Message)

Long before he laid down earth’s foundations, he had us in mind, had settled on us as the focus of his love, to be made whole and holy by his love. Long, long ago he decided to adopt us into his family through Jesus Christ. (What pleasure he took in planning this!) He wanted us to enter into the celebration of his lavish gift-giving by the hand of his beloved Son.

God has chosen me to be me. He’s chosen me to be part of his family. He doesn’t care what I’ve done in the past. All he wants is for me to seek Him as my friend and saviour. I’ve done that and the good news is, He has also chosen you – All you have to do is seek him.

Have you ever had a time at work where week after week, something happens that means you get diverted from the tasks that you planned to do, to do something else? Over the last month or so, that seems to be happening to me every week. Not only that, but the task I get diverted onto, are never quite as straightforward as they first seem, and so end up taking up much more of my time than anyone imagined.

What’s not helped for me, is that between annual leave and sickness absence in my team, there’s only ever been me and one of my team members working each day, for the last month. This has just meant that no matter how hard we try, we’ve not really managed to get through the work that I’d planned for us to do in June or July.

Even on Friday something which on the face of it looked like a task that would take an afternoon to do at the most, ended up uncovering another issue, which will need further analysis before deciding the best way to fix it.

There is good news though, as this week my team are back to three, as one of my team will be back from their summer holiday. So here’s hoping there’s no more unexpected issues, and we can finally get on with the work that I’d planned for us to do!

Washing

Have you got a favourite piece of clothing that is your ‘go to’ thing to wear? I have a few things which I always wear much more than other things, so as a result they get washed much more frequently than other items of clothing that I only wear occasionally.

I noticed earlier this week, when I was hanging one of my ‘go to’ tops on the clothes line, that some of the colours in the top were beginning to fade a bit because the top has been washed so much.

As items of clothing are washed more and more, the colours fade and the material can become stretched or thin as it wears out.

One of the phrases you may hear a lot of is the ‘God can wash away your sin’. God loves us and will wash away our sins, time after time. He won’t put a limit on the number of times he will forgive us, as he loves us too much not to forgive us!

Hebrews 10:10-12 (NLV)

Our sins are washed away and we are made clean because Christ gave His own body as a gift to God. He did this once for all time.

Unlike our clothes, the quality of our life does not deteriorate the more times God washes our sins away. In fact, each time God washes us, the our lives are renewed as he cleanses our hearts and minds.

So next time you wash your ‘go to’ clothes remember that although they may begin to fade and wear, God’s love for us will never fade, and therefore he will continue to wash our sins away.

Stuck!

Well yesterday at work I got stuck in one of our lifts for about half an hour!

I had been out for a walk at lunch time and on my return to our building felt a little tired so thought I’d get the lift rather than walking up three flights of stairs. I got in the lift and pressed the button for floor three, the lift went up to the third floor, but then the doors didn’t open. I tried going to each of the other floors again but still the doors wouldn’t open. I phoned one of my colleagues in my office and the started events to get the engineer to come and get me out.

When I did get out the lift, I was told I was very calm, which I was. It wasn’t the biggest of lifts and was absolutely roasting, but I’m not bothered by enclosed spaces, and ultimately knew I was in no danger etc. I was glad I was returning from my lunch and had a bottle of fruit juice with me, as I ended up drinking nearly all of it in the lift because it was so hot!

It’s funny I never really thought about what it would be like to be stuck in a lift before, but it was actually ok. Mind you, as one of my colleagues said it might not have ok if the lift had been full. Yeah stuck in a full lift with no room to move, does not sound like fun and would have been incredibly hot, as it was bad enough today with just me in the lift!

Well that’s one more thing I can I have now experienced, being stuck in a lift!

We’re never happy!

Yesterday was the hottest day of the year for many of us, as temperatures across the UK soared above 30 degrees. In some place it was actually the hottest July day ever recorded.

How many times yesterday did you say, or hear someone say, “it’s too hot!”? But earlier in the week when it was dull, cooler and possibly even a little wet, how many time dis you say, or hear someone say, “I just want a sunny day with no rain”?

And a few months ago when it was still Spring, how many times did you or someone else say, “it’s cold, I wish it was hotter”?

All contradictions, as when it’s cold we want the sun to come out so we get some heat, but when the sun is out and we get a hot day, we complain it’s too hot, and want it to cool down!

We’re never happy are we!

Is this just a UK thing, that we always complain about the weather regardless of whether it’s cold or hot? Or do people in other countries do this too?

Only God can provide all we need.

Only God is always there for us.

Only God deserves our praise.

Only God can give us eternal life.

God and God alone

God and God alone
Created all these things we call our own
From the mighty to the small
The Glory in them all
Is God’s and God’s alone

God and God alone
Reveals the truth of all we call unknown
And all the best and worst of man
Won’t change the Master’s plan
It’s God’s and God’s alone

God and God alone
Is fit to take the universe’s throne
Let everything that lives
Reserve it’s truest praise
For God and God alone

God and God alone
Will be the joy of our eternal home
He will be our one desire
Our hearts will never tire
Of God and God alone

God and God alone
Is fit to take the universe’s throne
Let everything that lives
Reserve it’s truest praise
For God and God alone

God and God alone
Is fit to take the universe’s throne
Let everything that lives
Reserve it’s truest praise
For God and God

Let everything that lives
Reserve it’s truest praise
For God and God alone!

I have found the music and words of a particular song going through my mind constantly for the last few days.

O Love, that wilt not let me go,
I rest my weary soul in Thee;
I give Thee back the life I owe,
That in Thine ocean depths its flow
May richer, fuller be.

Tune: St. Margaret

I’ve found myself thinking a lot about my Mum in these last few days, so I guess it shouldn’t surprise me that this song has being going round my head. Just as God promised to love me unconditionally, so I am reminded that Mum and Dad always loved me.

It is because of the love and guidance I received as a youngster that I came to believe in God, and having grown up in the Salvation Army, I ultimately gave him my all when I was enrolled as a senior soldier of Rutherglen Salvation Army when a teenager.

Yes, that was a while ago now, and yes I’ve questioned and doubted God on many occasions, however God has never let me go, and has always stayed by my side and guided and strengthened me, even when at the time, it didn’t feel like it.

O Joy, that seekest me through pain,
I cannot close my heart to Thee;
I trace the rainbow through the rain,
And feel the promise is not vain
That morn shall tearless be.

Don’t ever let go of God, because He will never let go of you!

I know I’ve mentioned it before, but I feel it important to mention again, that it is perfectly normal for us when we’re going through difficult times, to feel abandoned by God.

Even in those times of doubt, our faith will keep us strong, and keep us believing in God. Why? Because of this..

God will always look after us, even when we think He’s forgotten us. He will take care of us, and because of that, those who love us will pray for us.

Joshua 1:9 (The Message)

Haven’t I commanded you? Strength! Courage! Don’t be timid; don’t get discouraged. God, your God, is with you every step you take.

As I mentioned in yesterday’s blog post (Granted), I reminded you that being a Christian does mean you are immune from facing difficulties in your life. However, we are assured that we never have to face any problem on our own, because just as it tells us in Joshua, God will be with us through everything.

It may seem at time that God isn’t with you, but remember, God does everything in His time, not in the timescales we necessarily want. Just trust God, because His is always with you.
