The world seems to be becoming a darker and more desperate place by the week. Not a week seems to go by without us hearing about a shooting, stabbing or an act of terrorism.

I wonder how this world has got into such an awful state, but then I remind myself that I know why – The world has forgotten or dismissed Jesus as not relevant anymore.

Because of the state the world is in just now, Jesus is in fact even more relevant that he ever was, because He is the hope this world needs.

The world needs Jesus, so let’s take the message of Jesus to the world, and show the world that there is hope.

Once again this week, we’ve seen many killed in America by someone who decided to use guns they owned to needlessly kill others.

No wonder we find ourselves asking again, “where is love?”

Love is the only force capable of turning an enemy into a friend. ~ Martin Luther King Jr.

With all that’s going on in the world it can be hard to believe sometimes that love can overcome evil. But if we believe in God, and believe in Jesus, we must believe God’s love can overcome the evil in this world.

Once again news of another shooting in America hit the news headlines on Sunday night. Just about the time I heard of this latest atrocity, I read the following by Nicky Gumbel, and never did these words seem more appropriate:

You are never more like God than when you are helping hurting people, lifting up the fallen and restoring the broken.

Please join me in praying for the family and friends of all those caught up in the events at the First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs in Texas last night.

The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. ~ Psalm 34:18

I’ve written a few blog posts in the last while where I’ve asked you whether you had ever noticed how there are some things which happen in films which never ever happen in real life – today it’s time for some more examples of this!

  1. Creepy music  coming from a graveyard should always be closely investigated on your own
  2. You should always go out alone a car in a thunderstorm, especially if you’re looking for someone
  3. Cars will explode instantly when struck by a single bullet
  4. Prostitutes always look like Julia Roberts or Jamie Lee Curtis
  5. No matter how savagely a spaceship is attacked, its internal gravity system is never damaged
  6. All food shopping will include the purchase of at least one French loaf which will be carried in open brown paper bag
  7. Prostitutes always have expensive clothes and a nice flat/house, but no pimps
  8. If being chased through a city you can usually take cover in a passing parade – no matter what time of year it is, there’s always a parade!
  9. Megalomaniacs always use complicated devices incorporating fuses, pulleys, deadly gases, lasers or man-eating sharks
  10. Prostitutes are friendly with the shopkeepers in their neighbourhood who don’t mind at all what they do for a living.

Any of these sound familiar?

Obviously these are complete generalisations because not every film follows the above rules, but I’m sure you’ll agree, you can think of a lot which do!

  1. Television news bulletins usually contain a story that affects you personally at the precise moment it’s aired.
  2. If you try to pass yourself off as a German officer, it will not be necessary to learn to speak German – you simply need to speak in English with a German accent
  3. All German soldiers speak to one another in English, even when they are alone.
  4. It’s always either foggy or there’s a thunderstorm when someone has to meet someone in a graveyard.
  5. A single match is usually sufficient to light up a room the size of a football stadium.
  6. One man shooting at 20 men has a better chance of killing them all than the 20 men have of killing the man on his own.
  7. All beds have special sheets that always reach to the  armpits of the woman in the bed, but only up to the waist of the man lying beside her.
  8. In Middle America, all gas station attendants have red handkerchiefs hanging out of their back pockets.
  9. Guns are like disposable razors. If you run out of bullets, just throw the gun away. you will always find another one.
  10. If you suddenly decide to start dancing in the street, everyone in the street will know all the steps.

On Friday I think we were all shocked and deeply saddened to hear of the shooting of 12 little girls, 6 little boys and 8 adults, when a heavily armed gunman, aged just 20-years-old himself, forced his way into a school in Newtown, Connecticut (USA). I’ve found myself constantly thinking of the families and friend of all those who were killed – An atrocity like this is bad enough at any time of the year, but it’s particularly sad as Christmas is so close.

Therefore today I want to remind you that although we often sing, “Christmas is a time to love”, loving others and showing our love for others should not just be a Christmas thing, it’s something we should do all year round. So take some time out today and every day to tell those you love, particularly your children, just how much they mean to you, and how much you love them.

Don’t Save It All For Christmas Day

Don’t get so busy that you miss
Giving just a little kiss
To the ones you love
Don’t even wait a little while
To give them just a little smile
A little is enough
See how many people are crying
Some people are dying
How many people are asking for love

o don’t save it all for Christmas day
Find a way
To give a little love every day
Don’t save it all for Christmas day
Find a way
‘Cause holidays have come and gone
But love lives on
If you give on
Love

How could you wait another minute
A hug is warmer when you’re in it
Oh, baby that’s a fact
And saying I love you’s always better
Seasons, reasons they don’t matter
So don’t hold back
See how many people in this world
So needful in this world
How many people are praying for love

So let all the children know
Everywhere that they go
Their whole life long
Let them know love
