I must admit, after writing yesterday’s blog post in the middle of last week, I’ve struggled to get any inspiration for today’s or the rest of this week’s blog posts…that is until yesterday!

Yesterday morning at church, we were treated to a beautiful vocal solo by Olwyn Mathie which reminded us that even when it seems to constantly raining in our lives, God is with us, and will soon turn our rain to sunshine.

Last week was not only a week of very wet and rainy weather for us, but also one where I felt that the rain in my life was never going to end. So Olwyn’s solo was the reminder I needed, that even when life is tough, the sunshine is not far away when we trust God.

I pray that whatever difficulties you may be facing just now, you too will be reminded that God is always with us and so the sunshine is not far away when we trust Him.

Let the Holy Spirit come over you now
As the healing rain falls from the clouds
There is nothing you can do to deserve it
You don’t have to earn His love
Let the rain fall from above
Merciful rain falls over the children
Merciful rain falls over the children
Merciful rain falls over the children of God
Over the children of God
Merciful rain falls
See the Holy Dove descending over you now
Feel the Living Water cleansing your soul
In the name of Jesus you have been forgiven
You have been redeemed forever
Fix your eyes on Heaven

I remember when I was young, my gran used to beckon me to “come close so I can…”. I would get all excited when she said that to me, as often it was to give me a some sweets or some coins from her purse. It maybe doesn’t sound like much now, but at that time, and at that age, it really meant something to me.

There is another person who beckoned to me to “come close” many years ago, and I responded, and that is God. God continues to call me to Him after all these years, because He knows that sometimes I just need reminded to go to Him when I’m in trouble.

As you come close to God in prayer, He brings purpose even from the brokenness of your life. You can’t remain downcast when you turn your face upward to God. He reaches down to your lowest pit, but He doesn’t leave you there. Women Who Move Mountains – @SueDetweiler

I recently heard the word ‘runaway’ on a TV programme which I wasn’t particularly watching, it was just a noise in the corner. I’ve found since then that since then I’ve thought about ‘runaways’ on a number of occasions since then, but wasn’t entirely sure why.

So I decided to think about this in more detail and find out why this word was nagging at me. First I though I’d think about ‘runaway’ situations:

  • Children or teenagers running away from home.
  • Running away from a dangerous of hazardous situation.
  • Not running away in the physical sense, but in an emotional sense when you try to distance yourself from emotional or stressful events or situations.
  • Again, not running away in the physical sense, but in an emotional sense when you try to distance yourself from a work situation you don’t want to get involved in.
  • Believing God exists and knowing you should trust Him, but failing to full give Him your all, means you’re running away from Him and His abundant love.

Running away can sometimes be the only option in some circumstances, for example when you’re in danger. However when it comes to running away from God, is there really a good reason to run? God has only ever offered each of us his love, forgiveness of our sins and everlasting life – All he wants in turn is our all. When we give him our all we can find that perfect peace we’ve been seeking for so long.

“Something that only your faith in God will get you through”

A couple of questions for you:

  • Have you ever felt like you’re facing something you will no be able to get through?
  • Do you feel your faith in God is strong enough to get you through everything you face?

Even if you answered No to my second question it doesn’t mean you will not get through whatever you’re facing, because God will always be there with you, guiding you. At the time you may be unaware of God’s hand in what is going on around you, but be assured, He is always with you and will be there for you whenever you need Him.

When you need to get through tough times, trust God, as He will be your strength and your guide.

Rule

  • One of a set of explicit or understood regulations or principles governing conduct or procedure within a particular area of activity.
  • Control of or dominion over an area or people.

Let’s take a closer look at the second definition – control of or dominion over an area or people.

How is your life? Is your life controlled by others, say your kids, or your work?

When it comes to our relationship with God, He is always in control. And if we’ve given every part of our life to God, we have given him control of our life, so he can use us as He needs to tell others about His unconditional love for every one of us.

So let God rule your life, because that’s the only way we will ever experience true happiness, when He is at the centre of all we do.

How many times have you heard or been told that you can choose your friends but you can’t choose your family?

If you were given that option, would you choose the family you have? And secondly, do you think your family choose you?

When in comes to God’s family, we are all chosen. God made every one of us individually and uniquely in his image, so it’s no surprise God will always choose us. The question is, based on our words and our actions, do we deserve to be chosen by God?

Let’s do all we can do to deserve God’s unconditional love. And just as God loves us unconditionally, let’s make sure we everyone we meet unconditionally.

When you see people at their most vulnerable, you realise each and every one of us, no matter their background or lifestyle, are just the same – they each have to rely on someone else to save them.

I recently watched a medical programme on TV where one of the doctors said those words. They were such powerful words I had to write them down when I heard them so I didn’t forget them.

When we are at our most vulnerable we really need those who love us and who can do something to help us, to be there with us – After all if you came across a building on fire, you wouldn’t call the coastguard to put out the fire would you, you’d call the fire brigade.

So when we’re feeling vulnerable we should turn to God, as he is the only one who can provide us with the love, support and help we need at that time – His answer may be to send us a friend to share our worries with; or give us direction when we there seems too many choices ahead of us. Whatever we face, God is the answer, so should be the one we turn to in our time of need.

It can feel at times like your live is broken, that you are broken, as no matter what way you turn, or what you do, your life just doesn’t seem to improve.

Do you keep praying even when you feel broken?

Regardless of whether you keep praying during your toughest times, God remains will you. He may not answer any of your prayers in the way or timescale you want, but he will always answer your prayers.

When you look around you, what do you see?

Do you see a world full of despair and brokenness, or do you see the wonder of nature and people who are valuable who can change the world?

When God is at the centre of our lives, God is part of everything in our life and then we will see the beauty in everything, and the best in everyone.

That’s the kind of view of the world I want, how about you?

We all have times in our life when we face challenges. e.g. the death of a loved one, unemployment, serious illness. Based on some of the things I’ve learned about myself and from talking to others, I want to share with you some things to think about when you’re facing some tough situations. I hope you find this helpful:

Admit you’re struggling

You may not realise just how much you’re struggling. However I’m sure your family or friends will have noticed a difference in you. So if someone asks you if you’re ok, don’t just say ‘yes’ really look at yourself, and be honest with yourself. After all, if you don’t know you’re struggling or in trouble, how can you start to help yourself?

Don’t hide

When you’re struggling you’ll probably feel like you want to hide away from everyone in a darkened room or in a corner. That is one of the worst things you could do! The best way to keep your emotions under control when you’re struggling is actually to keep busy. When you’re busy there’s more chance you’ll focus on the task in hand instead of continually thinking about all your problems, as that will bring you down even more.

Say ‘No’

Are you the kind of person who always says ‘yes’ when someone asks you to do something? If you are, this one might be very difficult for you, but please consider it as I believe it really is quite uplifting to say ‘No’ sometimes. You may be struggling to do everything you’re already trying to do. So remember you do not need to do everything you’re asked to do. So say ‘No’, and use that extra time to take control of your life and your emotions.

Help

You probably think I’m just suggesting you seek help for yourself from either a friend or a help care professional, however I’m also suggesting you also help others too. One of the times I was struggling, I discovered a friend was also going through a really tough time and I definitely found that by talking with them, and trying to help them, it helped me focus on someone else’s problems instead of my own. Being able to offer support and help to someone else raised my spirits, as it showed me I was still useful and helpful to someone. So speak to others about how you’re feeling, as you may be surprised to find they too may be going through a difficult time and would be grateful for your support too.

Trust

This may be my final suggestion, but it is in fact the most important one – Trust God! God is with us all the time even when we ignore him or forget him. God will always answer your prayers – Maybe not today or tomorrow, but he’ll answer them. Maybe not in the way you wanted or expected, but he will answer your prayer. So trust Him! Believe in God!
