I recently heard the song “Land of Confusion” by Genesis for the first time in a long while. The lyrics really struck me more this time than they had previously – maybe it’s because in the last few days I’ve been blogging about how we need to be the ones who help change this world for the better.

Anyway, I decided to look into the lyrics a little bit more, and found the following quotes from Phil Collins and Mike Rutherford:

Phil Collins called it, “A political song about the mess we have landed in.”

Mike Rutherford called this “a kind of ’80s protest song,” adding that, “It’s about how we live in a very nice world, and what a mess we’re making of it. How it should be all so easy and it’s all so difficult”.

Here’s some of the lyrics from this song:

This is the world we live in
And these are the hands we’re given
Use them and let’s start trying
To make it a place worth living in.
Ooh superman where are you now
When everything’s gone wrong somehow
The men of steel, the men of power
Are losing control by the hour.
This is the time
This is the place
So we look for the future
But there’s not much love to go round
Tell me why, this is a land of confusion.

Now can you see why the lyrics of this song seems to strike a chord with me? So just as I’ve said in the last few days that we need to be God to the world, so this song remind me again of the desperate state this world and the people in it are in. The world really does need God, so help tell the world about God, so that we see this world change from a land of confusion to one full of love and compassion for one another.

Here’s the original Genesis video for Land of Confusion – The video uses puppets created by Peter Fluck and Roger Law, who had a satirical TV series called Spitting Image. In the video, puppets of the Genesis musicians are featured, as well as some well-known political figures from that time.

I’ve done a few Word Associations and Places Associations with you, and several other UK specific Places Association which, as the title suggests, is all about places in the UK. i.e. cities, countries, towns etc.

So instead of throwing words at you and responding with the first word that comes into your mind, today I’m going to throw names of places in the UK at you, and this time I want you to respond with whatever comes into your mind first about that place.

So here goes…cities

  1. Slough
  2. Bristol
  3. York
  4. Preston
  5. Wimbledon
  6. Darlington
  7. Oban
  8. St Andrews
  9. Sheffield
  10. Derry

So how did you get on with those words? Did you find it easy? Did your answers surprise you or were they just as you expected?

Well here’s my responses to my questions:

  1. The Office
  2. Airport
  3. B&B
  4. Train
  5. Tennis
  6. Car
  7. Sea
  8. University
  9. Cutlery
  10. Boots

Were any of your answers the same as mine? Did you understand all my answers? Did any of your own answers surprise you?

I’ve said in previous word association posts that I find I get a bit stressed when I’m doing them as I put a lot of pressure on myself not to over think my answers! Are you relaxed when you do them or do you find it stressful too?

I still believe that when we respond to any of these words or place association games, with the first things that come into our minds, our answers tell us a lot about our emotional state and our true feelings about a place.

Bearing all this in mind, review your answers, does my theory hold true?

Are you looking for simple ways to encourage your heart and nourish your soul?

In the last while I’ve given you some ideas which will hopefully inspire you to implement them in your own life, and over the coming weeks I’ll share some others with you.

So here’s today’s suggestion:

Share your inspiration

Is there someone in your life you has inspired you? Take a few minutes today to tell them how much they have inspired you as they may not realise how much they have influenced you. In doing so you will brighten their day as well as yours.

Treat yourself

Sometimes we just need to give ourselves a treat to life our spirits, so whether it’s buying yourself a piece of clothing you’ve had your eye on, or a new laptop you’ve wanted for ages, or just an afternoon out for coffee – whatever a treat is for you, go on, treat yourself!

Turn off your TV

Controversial?

I know TV can be a huge part of many people’s lives these days, but I think we can get too caught up in Tv shows – drama, reality shows, sitcoms, soaps – but is it healthy for you or your relationship with your family?

Why now choose a day where no-one in your family turns on your TV one day. i.e. Have a TV free day, so that you and your family can spend some quality time together, talking to one another and more importantly listening to one another.

So here’s today’s suggestion:

Buy some fresh flowers

It may seem a simple and slightly stupid to you to suggest that by buying fresh flowers, it will somehow brighten you say and lift your spirits, but it can. Having bright flowers on table in the room you’re in will brighten that room and fill it with the beautiful fresh smell of freshly cut flowers.

Sometimes we need to remind ourselves of how beautiful nature is, and so having fresh flowers is an excellent way to do this.

Wear Superman underpants!

I bet you’re thinking I’ve lost it aren’t you? Well, I haven’t, so let me explain my suggestion – I don’t actually mean you have to wear Superman underpants, but I am suggesting that underneath you’re clothes you wear something daft or silly that no-one can see and only you know about.

The very fact that it’s just you who knows about the daft item you’re wearing underneath your clothing will cheer you every time you think about it. i.e. It’ll brighten your day.
