In the last week, I’ve noticed on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram that number of friends have taken on the ’10 year challenge’ which requires the person to post a photo themselves as they are now, and one from 10 years ago. It’s been interesting to see the difference (or not) between the two photographs, but it also got me thinking about how when we think of ageing and the changes it brings to us, we tend to think about the external or visible changes, rather than how the person has changed on the inside.

When I look back at myself 10 years ago, I see a different person looking back at me from the one I see in the mirror today – The difference is not just in how I look but in who I am today. I’ve experienced many different events and emotions over the last 10 years which have changed my perspective on life, and also the kind of person I am.

How about you, how have you changed over the last 10 years? Are you more loving, empathetic, relaxed, positive or more grumpy, cynical, critical, negative?

I simply pray today that we don’t concentrate so much on our outward appearance that we forget to see the beauty within ourselves and others.

I’ve done a few Word Associations with you over the last while, and today it’s time for another one. So as usual I’m going to throw some words at you  and I want you to note down the first word that comes into your mind when you read each word.

So here goes…

  1. wordsShoe
  2. Headphones
  3. Hairdresser
  4. Spreadsheet
  5. Love
  6. Heater
  7. Dishes
  8. Remote
  9. Paper
  10. Black

So how did you get on with those words? Did you find it easy? Did your answers surprise you or were they just as you expected?

Well here’s my responses to my questions:

  1. Small
  2. Music
  3. Style
  4. Format
  5. Family
  6. Winter
  7. Food
  8. Control
  9. Plane
  10. Bag

Were any of your answers the same as mine? Did any of my answers confuse you? Did any of your own answers confuse you?

I’ve said in previous word association posts that I find I get a bit stressed when I’m doing them as I put a lot of pressure on myself not to over think my answers! Are you relaxed when you do them or do you find it stressful too?

I still believe that when we respond with the first words that come into our minds, our answers tell us a lot about our emotional state, and what’s important to us at that particular point in time.

Bearing all this in mind, review your answers, does my theory hold true?

By the way, if you want me to explain any of my answers, just ask!

Today I finally got around to going to the hairdressers to get my hair done – It’s been needing done for weeks but just been needing what free time I’ve had to try and recharge my batteries and gain some strength back to face the next week of challenges. Today however, I finally made it to the hairdressers.

Been having a bit of a tough time again recently with concerns about the health of a number of close family members, plus I continue to not feel 100% myself.

So today, getting my hair done made me feel a bit better. Funny how something as simple as getting your hair done, treating yourself, can lift your spirits. It’s good to treat yourself sometimes…even if it just lifts your spirits for a short time.

A Beautiful Heart

I found this story while surfing the internet today. It’s a beautiful story and one which really touched me and got me all emotional again. I hope and pray if you look at my heart you will find it in the same condition as that of the old man in this story.

Look after you heart for Jesus’ sake.

A Beautiful Heart

One day a young man was standing in the middle of the town
proclaiming that he had the most beautiful heart in the whole valley.
A large crowd gathered and they all admired his heart for it was perfect.
There was not a mark or a flaw in it.
Yes, they all agreed it truly was the most beautiful heart they had ever seen.
The young man was very proud and boasted more loudly about his beautiful heart.

Suddenly, an old man appeared at the front of the crowd and said,
“Why your heart is not nearly as beautiful as mine.”
The crowd and the young man looked at the old man’s heart.
It was beating strongly … but it was full of scars …
it had places where pieces had been removed and other pieces put in …
but they didn’t fit quite right and there were several jagged edges.
In fact … in some places there were deep gouges where whole pieces were missing.
The people stared … how can he say his heart is more beautiful … they thought?

The young man looked at the old man’s heart … and saw its state and laughed.
“You must be joking,” he said. “Compare your heart with mine …
mine is perfect and yours is a mess of scars and tears.”
“Yes” … said the old man … “yours is perfect looking but …
I would never trade with you.
You see … every scar represents a person to whom I have given my love …
I tear out a piece of my heart and give it to them …
and often they give me a piece of their heart
which fits into the empty place in my heart …
but because the pieces aren’t exact …
I have some rough edges … which I cherish …
because they remind me of the love we shared.

Sometimes I have given pieces of my heart away …
and the other person hasn’t returned a piece of his heart to me.
These are the empty gouges … giving love is taking a chance.
Although these gouges are painful …
they stay open … reminding me of the love I have for these people too …
and I hope someday they may return and fill the space I have waiting.
So now do you see what true beauty is?”

The young man stood silently with tears running down his cheeks.
He walked up to the old man … reached into his perfect young and beautiful heart …
and ripped a piece out.
He offered it to the old man with trembling hands.
The old man took his offering … placed it in his heart …
and then took a piece from his old scarred heart …
and placed it in the wound in the young man’s heart.
It fit … but not perfectly … as there were some jagged edges.
The young man looked at his heart …
not perfect anymore but more beautiful than ever …
since love from the old man’s heart flowed into his.
They embraced and walked away side by side.

Have you looked around you recently and really taken in what you see? The beautiful scenery, the animals and the something we all spend so much time moaning about or commenting on, the weather!

Today I was a passenger in the car when we were out for a while. This allowed me for the first time in a while, to take in the views and scenery around us. Wow! What a beautiful things God has given us in this world, many of which I know I’ve been taking for granted. Yes, some parts are not very nice, but they are the man made additions we humans have made and not the beautiful things God made for us in this world.

My guess is you’ll have been the same is me, not really noticing what’s around us everyday, the trees, the flowers, the hills, mountains, streams, rivers, birds and other animals, the sands, and other expanses of scenery that have been unspoilt by man.

Have a look around you and pretend it’s the first time you’ve ever seen it. Look at the landscape, the trees, grass, water. Look at the animals and birds. Isn’t this a beautiful land?

I thank God for the beauty of this earth, and I pray that I will not take it for granted, after all, God put a lot of work into it!

The following video is accompanied by a song by Brian Doerksen which talks about all the things God has created for us. The song is call “Creation Calls“. I hope it remind you of God’s creation and that you find bless from it.
