Man seems to have been fascinated by the future for a long time, we just need to look back at the numerous movies that have been made over the years, all set in a world imagined to be ‘the future’.

  • 1984
  • 2001: A space odyssey
  • Alien
  • Avatar
  • Bill and Ted’s excellent adventure
  • I, Robot
  • Intersellar
  • Lost in space
  • Planet of the apes
  • Etc…

Some of those films were set in a time that is actually now in the past. E.g. 1984. I think it’s fair to say the film version of the future has never really turned out to be particularly accurate, has it!

I know a few people who visit psychics to find out a little of what their future holds for them. I don’t know about you, but I know I wouldn’t want to know what lies ahead for me.

At a member of the Salvation Army, a Salvationist, I made promises to God to serve him not just today and tomorrow, but in our future days. I always seem to end up with the words of a particular song going through my mind when I think about the promises I’ve made to God.

O Jesus, I have promised
To serve Thee to the end;
Be Thou forever near me,
My Master and my Friend;
I shall not fear the battle
If Thou art by my side,
Nor wander from the pathway
If Thou wilt be my Guide.

This song doesn’t just remind me my promises, but as it was a special song to some of my family, it remind me that they made those same promises to God, and they did keep them in their future, right ‘to the end’.

Our future is not just about us keep our promises to God, but Him also keeping his promises to us, as that’s where we get our reassurance that no matter what we face God is with us:

Jeremiah 29:11

For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

Isaiah 41:10

So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

As you’ve probably gathered I’ve been thinking a lot about the future, and have prayed  that I will stay true to God no matter what the future holds for me. There will be times of great joy ahead, but also some challenging times too, but I know I can face them with confidence if I remember these words:

There is a name I call in times of trouble
There is a song that comforts in the night
There is a voice that calms the storm that rages
He is Jesus, Jesus
—JESUS—

Christmas is a time for family

Christmas is a time for celebrating

Christmas is a time for giving

Christmas is a time for parties

Christmas is a time for loving one another

Christmas is time for Christ

Is Christmas a time for Christ, for you?

I’ve heard a few conversations recently about Christmas, and have been disappointed that just about all these conversations have been about the commercial side of Christmas rather than about Christ. These conversations have been about buying gifts, partying and drinking to excess then suffering hangovers as a result, eating to excess, spending time with family – some complaining about the stress involved with this, time off work, to name a few of the things that were discussed.

What I personally don’t get is why, particularly at this time of year, people want to drink to excess and become so drunk that they can’t remember much, if anything, about their night out, and then feel really ill the next day or two!

no christ no christmasWhere is Christ in all of this, and all these conversations?

Even when someone in the discussion mentioned church or chapel, it was talked about as if it is a chore as going to church/chapel at Christmas is only done out of duty, not because they want to celebrate the reason for the season.

Please don’t get too caught up in partying and presents this Christmas, that you forget that if Christ hadn’t been born, there would be no CHRISTmas!

When we’re asked a question, we can often give elaborate answers which really tell the questioner nothing. So for the following questions I’m looking for single word answers only :

  1. When was the last time you encouraged someone?
  2. When was the last time someone encouraged you?
  3. Are you in need a hug from a friend?
  4. Are you growing in your Christian experience?
  5. Are you where God wants you to be?

Whatever your answers, did you answer honestly or did you give the answers you think you should be giving?

If you didn’t answer honestly, can I suggest you try again, but this time be honest with yourself, because if you are, you might get an insight into the ares of your life you need to change.

oneword

When someone asks you that question, do you answer honestly?

I guess it maybe depends on the situation and your circumstances. i.e. If you’re in a shop buying a special birthday present for your partner you maybe wouldn’t want to tell them which shop you’re in as it would give away your surprise gift.

What if I asked you where you are in your Christian experience today? Would you answer that question honestly?

Again, I guess it depends on who’s asking the question and how well you know them and also where you are in your relationship with God. After all it’s unlikely you’ll bear any doubts to a complete stranger but conversely, you’re more likely to open up to a close friend you knows you and your Christian journey.

So wherever you are in your Christian journey today, keep trusting Him and keep Him at the centre of your life.

You may or may not agree with me but I believe that

I’m not a great example of Christianity but I am a much improved version of who I used to be

I’m not sure where I came across that quote, but it has really stuck with me, and has also challenged me to contemplate how much more I need to improve as a Christian.

I’ve made a lot of mistakes in the past and said and done a lot of things I’m not proud of, but I know over the years my relationship with God has grown stronger, as has my faith and trust that He is with me always, guiding and helping me through each day.

I simply pray that God will continue to help me become a better example of Christianity, so that others will see Him through my words and actions.

So that’s Christmas and New Year over, and soon we’ll all be back at work or school, and everything will be back to normal…whatever normal might be!

I’m sure many are already thinking about the big credit card bills that will soon be coming our way, or complaining about all the food we’ve consumed over the festive period (again!). Many of us will have made new year resolutions to make changes in our lives, so our lives can be “better” in 2016. So let me ask you a question about your new year resolutions, were any of your new year resolutions about your relationship with God?

Maybe God’s never been part of your life, or maybe you used to believe in God but events or people made you doubt Him and turn away from Him, or maybe you still believe he exists but just haven’t taken that extra step and given Him your heart…whatever your current relationship is with God (if any), why not make a new start with God and give Him your heart at the start of this new year.

What Now? by Steven Curtis Chapman

I saw the face of Jesus
In a little orphan girl
She was standing in the corner
On the other side of the world
And I heard the voice of Jesus
Gently whisper to my heart
Didn’t you say you wanted to find Me
Well, here I am, here you are

So what now
What will you do now that you’ve found Me?
What now
What will you do with this treasure you’ve found
I know I may not look like what you expected
But if you’ll remember
This is right where I said I would be
You found me, what now?

And I saw the face of Jesus
Down on Sixteenth Avenue
He was sleeping in an old car
While his mom went looking for food
And I heard the voice of Jesus
Gently whisper to my soul
Didn’t you say you wanted to know me
Well, here I am
And it’s getting cold

So what now
What will you do now that you’ve found Me?
What now
What will you do with this treasure you’ve found
I know I may not look like what you expected
But if you’ll remember
This is right where I said I would be
You found me, what now?

 So come and know
Come and know, know me now
Come, come and know, know me now
 Oh, come and know
Come, come and know, know me now
Come, come and know, know me now

A friend recently shared this on Facebook

empty me and fill me

Break me, melt me, mould me, fill me.

Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me.

We need to be willing to clear out our lives of all our personal baggage and let Him fully into our lives.

And it’s because of my faith in the above statement that I say the following…

faith

We will overcome
When You are with us we are strong
And love will be our greatest song
We’ll keep the faith and stand forever

If we are strong we can stand up against anything. To stand strong, we must put our full trust in God to guide and direct us especially when we’re frightened of what lies ahead of us.

Be strong, and keep the faith!

Keep the faith by Tim Hughes

I’m laying out all the pieces of my life
On the altar, I’m Your sacrifice
Let Your fire fall, I’m waiting here
Come and take it all, this heart of fearAll I want is to do my father’s will
And be a voice to a world that’s standing still
I must the keep the faith, not backing down
We must keep the faith, this is our time

We will overcome
When You are with us we are strong
And love will be our greatest song
We’ll keep the faith and stand forever

If not us who will shout Your song of praise?
For every soul to be saved in Jesus name
So we must keep the faith, not backing down
We must live this faith, this is our time, oh

We will overcome
When You are with us we are strong
And love will be our greatest song
We’ll keep the faith and stand forever

We will overcome
When You are with us we are strong
And love will be our greatest song
We’ll keep the faith and stand forever

We believe in God Almighty
We believe in You
We will trust in God Almighty
We will trust in You

We believe in God Almighty
We believe in You
We will trust in God Almighty
We will trust in You

We will overcome
When You are with us we are strong
And love will be our greatest song
We’ll keep the faith and stand forever

We will overcome
When You are with us we are strong
And love will be our greatest song
We’ll keep the faith and stand forever

We’ll keep the faith and stand forever
We’ll live the faith and stand forever

Once again since Christmas, we’ve been trying to clear out the house a bit, as we seem to have accumulated things which either we’ve never used in years, or have forgotten we had bought, and therefore we don’t really need. Why is it that we hold onto so many things “just in case we need it”, because over all these years I could count on one hand the number of times that “just in case” moment has every happened!

It can be hard work to clearing out cupboards/wardrobes/attics of things we no longer need in our lives, sometimes made harder because we come across items which remind us of specific people, situations or events and that can cause us to reminisce and sometimes upset us and distract us from what we’re trying to do.

Maybe at the start of this new year, we need to not only clear out our physical belongs but also clear out our hearts and minds of hurts and disappointments that we are still holding onto. By holding onto hurts and disappointments and not giving them over to God, my guess would be that, if we’re honest with ourselves, they are probably still causing us more pain and hurt because we are still holding onto them.

So this new year why not clear out your emotional baggage as well as your physical belongs by giving them all to God and leaving them there, because in doing so you will feel as though a burden has been lifted from you.

Take all of these impurities
Giving You this wretched soul
I’m giving You these insecurities
Giving You all control
