Consider these questions – How many people in your street/neighbourhood in the last 5 years…

  • Have died of unnatural causes in the last 5 years?
  • Have been arrested by the police?
  • Have had a fire in their home?
  • Have been reunited with family members they had never met before?
  • Have had an affair with someone else in the street/neighbourhood?

Why am I asking all these questions? Well this week I’ve caught a few minutes of a few of the soaps on TV: EastEnders, Coronation Street, Neighbours, to name but a few of the soaps on TV just now.

I know it’s only TV, but do they really give a true reflection of reality? I don’t think so! If you answered my questions above, I’m sure your answers will be either be none or very few – Now compare that with even just one of those soaps and you’ll find the soaps are way ahead!

So now as I said, these are only TV programmes, but there are many people out there who can’t distinguish between TV programmes that are fiction and those that are real. Not only that but the amount of violence and heartache shown in these programmes can’t be good for those who watch. At a time when many are feeling the pressure of the credit crunch, we need programmes to cheer us and lift our spirits not show us violence and despair all the time.

I know and understand the soaps have their place and do have a huge following, so I’m not holding my breath on them changing.

So just remember the soaps are fiction, they are not real life – Real life can be so much better than what the soaps make out!
