Have you ever looked up and found yourself looking straight into an extra bright light, one which, even after you look away, still blinds you for a few minutes?

But did you see the flares in the sky?
Were you blinded by the light?
Did you see the sparks filled with hope?
You are not alone
‘Cause someone’s out there, sending out flares

When there’s darkness all around us, any kind of light can seem extra bright. That’s why even in our darkest days, God’s love shines through the darkness – We simply need to reach out and take hold of God’s light of love.

I want to be blinded by God’s love – not so I don’t see and appreciate everything and everyone around me, but simply so I keep my focus on God, and keep him at the centre of all I do.

Darkness can be terrifying at times, particularly when you’re in unfamiliar surroundings. You can’t see what dangers lie ahead, and have no idea whether there’s even a path in front of you or not.

Those same feelings apply when we’re facing tough times in our life – The darkness may not be physical darkness in these circumstances, but it still feels like a darkness because of our mood or our emotional state.

Those of us who believe in God are not immune from feeling ‘the darkness descend’ around their lives at times. That’s because, we are still human, we still go through the same life events and circumstances that everyone else does. The only difference is that we believe what the picture above tells us, that God guides us through every day of our lives, even those when we feel like we’re sinking into the darkness, are no-one cares.

It’s during those times that no matter how much we think God has abandoned or deserted us, we must continue to be faithful to God, as he is always faithful to us. He promised never to leave us, and God always keeps his promises. We just need to have faith.

Sitting in an empty room. Silence, apart from the ticking of the clock on the wall. It’s getting dark outside, but you don’t have the energy to stand up and put the light on. you’re actually enjoying the silence and the fact that no-one knows you’re there – No-one knows you’re sitting in the corner of a darkening room, enjoying the silence and the darkness.

Emptiness. Silence. They seem to go so well together. You don’t want the emptiness and the silence to end.

But then you realise just how dark the room has become, and the clock has moved on an hour since you were last aware of the time. You realise you’ve a million and one things you should be doing instead of just sitting in the darkness.

Question: Is there anything wrong with spending some time by yourself, sitting in the darkness, emptying your mind of all your worries and stresses?

Answer: I would have to say it sounds like a great thing to do – As it would free us from distractions around us, while giving us time to relax and refocus on what’s important to us. I’d also suggest it would be a good time to spend some quality time with God.

We can so often these days be so busy focusing on all the things on the periphery of our life, rather than concentrating on the important stuff. So if you find yourself on your own, in a darkening room, enjoy the emptiness and the quietness.

Time to shine

Are you ready to shine?

When it seems darkness is surrounding us, don’t despair, because no matter how bad life is, or how low we feel, we can find light in the darkness.

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. ~ John 1:5 (NIV)

Even when there seems to be no hope, be assured that even where there is the smallest light, that light can overcome the darkness – Just as good can overcome evil.

It will come

We have to believe, we must believe, that the light of the world will light this dark world of ours.

…and what can God’s love heal? Everything and anything!

God’s light can reach into corners of this world where there has only ever been darkness. To reach those corners of the world, God needs us to spread His message.

Are you up for the challenge?

Following on from yesterday’s blog post where I talked about how I’m beginning to dislike lying in bed trying to sleep, I have been reminded of the following song:

Out of my darkness God called me,
Out of the death of my night,
Out of the shadows of sorrow,
Into the life of his light.
Out of my darkness he called me,
Out of my doubt, my despair,
Out of the wastes of my winter,
Into the spring of his care.
Out of my darkness he called me
Into his sunshining day,
Out of my gloom to his glory;
What could I do but obey?
Out of your darkness he calls you,
Out of your doubt, your despair,
Out of the wastes of your winter,
Into the spring of his care.
by John Gowans

I pray regularly that God will give me the strength to get through these days, and although I may still be finding it difficult to not get upset because my Dad has passed away, I believe I would be finding this even more difficult if God wasn’t supporting me.

Therefore, I urge you to talk to God about all that concerns, worries or upsets you, as He, and He alone can truly give you the strength and the encouragement to face each day.

Are you afraid of the dark?

I’m definitely not afraid of the dark, however I am finding that when the darkness surrounds me when I’m lying in bed trying to sleep, it’s then my mind seems to want to do nothing but think about my Dad!

Don’t get me wrong it’s not that I don’t want to remember my Dad, because I will always remember him, but why every night when I go to bed? What makes it worse is that when I start thinking about Dad then, I get very emotional, get myself in a state and then can’t sleep!

So while I’ll not afraid of the dark, I don’t particularly look forward to lying in bed trying to sleep, as these days that seems to mean lots of tears and lack of sleep.

Yesterday in The Darkness I spoke about how we live in a world full of many negative and dark influences. Today I want us to think about how this world can be moved out of darkness, so that the people of this world are free from suffering, free from pain and full of optimism and hope for the future.

We can only change this world through prayer and belief that our prayers can and will be answered. We need to ask God for help, because He alone can help us all. Please join in prayer as you watch and listen to the following video:

Beauty and Brokenness (Graham Kendrick)

Beauty for brokenness
Hope for despair
Lord, in your suffering
This is our prayer
Bread for the children
Justice, joy, peace
Sunrise to sunset
Your kingdom increase!

Shelter for fragile lives
Cures for their ills
Work for the craftsman
Trade for their skills
Land for the dispossessed
Rights for the weak
Voices to plead the cause
Of those who can’t speak

God of the poor
Friend of the weak
Give us compassion we pray
Melt our cold hearts
Let tears fall like rain
Come, change our love
From a spark to a flame

Refuge from cruel wars
Havens from fear
Cities for sanctuary
Freedoms to share
Peace to the killing-fields
Scorched earth to green
Christ for the bitterness
His cross for the pain

Rest for the ravaged earth
Oceans and streams
Plundered and poisoned
Our future, our dreams
Lord, end our madness
Carelessness, greed
Make us content with
The things that we need

Lighten our darkness
Breathe on this flame
Until your justice
Burns brightly again
Until the nations
Learn of your ways
Seek your salvation
And bring you their praise
