When we’re asked a question, we can often give elaborate answers which really tell the questioner nothing. So for the following questions I’m looking for single word answers only :

  1. Do you set yourself goals or targets?
  2. Do you have a prayer list?
  3. Are you still hoping to achieve your dreams?
  4. Is your house your home?
  5. What inspires you?

Whatever your answers, did you answer honestly or did you give the answers you think you should be giving?

If you didn’t answer honestly, can I suggest you try again, but this time be honest with yourself, because if you are, you might get an insight into the areas of your life you need to change.

You’ll have gathered by now that I am a fan of Nicky Gumbel. And today is no different as I want to share another quote from Nicky Gumbel that I really love:

The reason why people give up so fast is because they tend to look at how far they still have to go, instead of how far they have come.

I’ve heard it said many times that you should never look back but instead look ahead. However it can be tough when your goals continue to seem a long way off, and don’t seem to be getting any closer to you. That’s why sometimes it is good to look back, because only then will we realise just how much we’ve already achieved and how far we’ve already come.

Our goal might just seem a more within our reach when we realise how close it is in comparison to how far we’ve come. So don’t give up until you’ve at least reminded yourself how far you’ve already come.

Friday of last week saw the start of the 2016 European Championships in France.

France, across the channel, but too far away for us, Scotland.

Failed to qualify for yet another major international football competition.

Football, a sport we consider to be our national sport, but one we are great at glorious failure.

France 2016, and we’re not there, but all the other home nations are.

Follow the scores and watch the games, but do we real support anyone as we’re not there?

Feel it’s more about wanting some good football, and plenty of goals, as intimately Scotland’s not there, so my heart’s not in supporting anyone else.

France 2016, hopefully the last of the major championships we miss out on, but good luck everyone who’s there.

Fast, flowing football with lots of goals please.

France 2016

How many times do you try something before you admit you can’t do it, and give up?

Do you give up when others tell you you should, so do you keep going until you know you have nothing more to try or to give?

Well, I just want to remind you today, not to listen to what others tell you, because it’s up to you when to give up. So if you feel you have other things to try or you could do better, keep going, keep trying, and you will achieve your goals.

When the world says, “Give up,” Hope whispers, “Try it one more time”.

Each day we all make 100’s of decisions or choices, many of them automatically, others we may have contemplated for many days or even weeks before finally making our choice. But what influences our choices? Your dreams or goals or your worst nightmares?

May your choices reflect your hopes, not your fears ~ Nelson Mandela

I hope the choices you make each day are ones to help you achieve your life goals and ones which simply backup your worst nightmares.

Have you planned what you want to achieve in your life?

Whether you have planned what you want to achieve in your life, or whether you just life each day as it comes, your days have actually been planned this way, by God!

In Jeremiah 29:11-12 (NIV) we read:

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you.

God has planned our life, but he is always there to listen to us when we come to him in prayer. So let him take control of your life and help you achieve the goals he has already set for you.

Happiness is really quite a strange thing isn’t it…different things make different people happy while we all express our happiness in different ways!

You ever noticed how some people always seem to be happy? I am confident that these people are not in fact happy all the time, as I’m sure that just like you and me, they have their problems and challenges in life, however they are just able to cope better or “put on a happy face” when in public.

Happiness is not the absence of problems it’s the ability to deal with them ~ Steve Maraboli

Just as this quote says, it’s all about how we deal with life’s challenges that determines our happiness level. I for one, try my best when in public to “be happy”, not because I always am, far from it, but because I find it so much easier to cope that way, as I find it difficult to talk about myself and my feelings with other, so would rather pretend everything was ok and try to put a smile on my face.

Life would be boring if we were all happy all the time, so life’s problems are God’s way of keeping us on our toes!
