The dictionary definition of betrayal is:

  • To give aid or information to an enemy
  • To deliver into the hands of an enemy in violation of a trust or allegiance
  • To be false or disloyal to
  • To divulge in a breach of confidence; betray a secret.
  • To make known unintentionally: Her hollow laugh betrayed her contempt for the idea.
  • To reveal against one’s desire or will.
  • To lead astray; deceive.

What do you think of when you hear the word betrayal?

Your first thoughts are probably of a time when a friend or loved one has passed on information about you to someone against your will or knowledge. However I’d like to direct your thoughts to the most infamous betrayal of all time, and that is the betrayal of Jesus by Judas Iscariot.

Luke 22:47-48 (NIV)

While he was still speaking a crowd came up, and the man who was called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him, but Jesus asked him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?”

Can you imagine a betrayal of the magnitude which Jesus suffered at the hands of Judas? One of Jesus disciples, one of his closest friends, tempted by Satan into giving Him away to the Romans. But it got even worse for Jesus, as well is Judas’ betrayal, Peter betrayed Christ 3 times by denying he knew Jesus.

Luke 22:54-62 (NIV)

Then seizing him, they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest. Peter followed at a distance. But when they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat down with them. A servant girl saw him seated there in the firelight. She looked closely at him and said, “This man was with him.”  But he denied it. “Woman, I don’t know him,” he said. A little later someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them.”  “Man, I am not!” Peter replied.

About an hour later another asserted, “Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean.” Peter replied, “Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed. The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times.” And he went outside and wept bitterly.

I can understand Peter’s denial of Jesus, he was scarred, he’d just seen Jesus arrested, he feared what would happen to him. But wait a minute, if Peter truly believed Jesus Christ was the Son of God, he would have put his faith and trust in God to look after him, even if that ultimately meant death.

So, if you were put in a situation where you are asked if you believe in Jesus Christ, and the penalty for following Christ is death, what would your answer be?

If I’m honest, I like many of you would have to admit that I would probably deny being a follower of Christ – Wow! What an admission I’ve just made! This Easter I pray that my faith in Christ may grow so that I can say without doubt that I would admit to being a follower of Jesus.

I pray this Easter that we may all experience the power of the cross, and grow in strength and faith because of that infamous betrayal all those years ago.

Mighty Is The Power of the Cross by Chris Tomlin

What can take a dying man and raise him up to life again?
What can heal a wounded soul?
What can make us white as snow?
What can fill the emptiness?
What can mend our brokenness?

Mighty, awesome, wonderful
Is the holy cross
Where the Lamb laid down His life
To lift us from the fall
Mighty is the power of the cross

What restores our faith in God?
What reveals the Father’s love?
What can lead the wayward home?
What can melt a heart of stone?
What can free the guilty ones
What can save and overcome?

Mighty, awesome, wonderful
Is the holy cross
Where the Lamb laid down His life
To lift us from the fall
Mighty is the power of the cross

It’s a miracle to me
And It’s still a mystery
It’s a miracle to me
The power of God
For those who believe

Mighty, awesome, wonderful
Is the holy cross
Where the Lamb laid down His life
To lift us from the fall
Mighty is …….
Mighty is…….
Mighty is the power of the cross

Thank You for the cross
Love the cross
So Powerful…… ohhhhh yeahhh
What can take a dying man?
And raise him up to life again?

Worship You Jesus
By your wounds we are healed
By your wounds we are saved
Mighty is the power of the cross
Thank You Jesus for the Holy cross
