We have 2 ears, but do we always use them to listen?

I’m sure we can all think of times when we’ve been talking to someone, but we are very aware that they aren’t really listening to us.

So what signs do they give out that tell us they’re not really listening? Looking around, but not looking at you; doing something else while you’re talking task such as typing an email, writing a note, or reading a document; saying ‘Yes’ or nodding agreement at random times without making eye contact with you.

When you are the one that’s talking, it can be annoying and frustrating when you know those you’re talking to aren’t really listening. That said, can we honestly say we always give our full attention to others when they are talking to us?

How about when you spend quiet time with God, do you listen completely to God, or are you distracted why things around you, or do your thoughts wander onto other people or things?

Just as it’s annoying tor us when others don’t listen to us when we’re talking, I’m sure God must get frustrated at us when we don’t focus 100% on Him.

So listen to others when they speak to you. Most importantly, listen to God.

It starts with the cross, continues with Jesus, and lasts forever because of God’s love.

1 Corinthians 13:13 (NIV)

And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

What does it mean to have faith in God?

Here’s what it says in Hebrews 11:3 (The living bible):

By faith—by believing God—we know that the world and the stars—in fact, all things—were made at God’s command; and that they were all made from things that can’t be seen.

Do you believe in “things that can’t be seen”? Is your faith in God strong enough to get you through all life is throwing your way?

Have faith, because God will always be with you.

Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him. ~ Psalm 62:5 (NIV)

There is only one person who can truly give us hope. Hope for today, and hope for the future. God, where all my hope comes from.

When you’re not sure what t do, or are looking for direction in your life, who do you turn to?

We can find the answer to that question in the book of James (1:5)

If you don’t know what you’re doing, pray to the Father. He loves to help. You’ll get his help, and won’t be condescended to when you ask for it.

God is understanding and receptive to your prayers. So believe in Him, have faith that He can and will give you the guidance and help you need.

Have you ever considered the cross as something powerful?

The cross is powerful because of what it represents – the sins of the world; forgiveness of all our sins.

What greater power can the cross ever represent other than forgiveness for our sins.

Have you accepted that power into your life?

The Power of the Cross

Oh, to see the dawn
Of the darkest day,
Christ on the road to Calvary.
Tried by sinful men,
Torn and beaten, then
Nailed to a cross of wood.

This, the power of the cross,
Christ became sin for us
Took the blame, bore the wrath
We stand forgiven at the cross.

Oh, to see the pain
Written on Your face,
Bearing the awesome weight of sin.
Every bitter thought,
Every evil deed
Crowning Your bloodstained brow.

Now the daylight flees
Now the ground beneath
Quakes as its Maker bows His head.
Curtain torn in two,
Dead are raised to life,
“Finished!” the victory cry.

Fallen from grace, by faith lifted up
Now I believe no height no depth can keep us
from the love of Christ
No life no death no trial,
can tear us from the love of God in Christ

Have you ever felt like there was nothing left for you, that you could take no more pain and no more trials?

I guess we’ve all felt like that at one time or another, but given you are reading this today, what got you through those times of deepest despair?

For me during my darkest of times, I would have told you it was all me, I got myself through those days. However having got out the other side of those dark days, and now looking back on them, I realise that some of the choices I made at the time were no choice I would normally have made. I therefore acknowledge that God gave me the strength and direction to keep going when I felt I could go on no more.

No life no death no trial, can tear us from the love of God in Christ.

The power

What do you think of when you think of power?

Someone who is physically strong and unmovable; a supernatural power; authority in a system or situation

The cross on which Christ died is a sign of God’s power, His authority over us. The cross reminds us how much God loves us, and gave God the power and authority to forgive us of all our sins.

…everything to me

Bold words, but words I really do mean.

How about you, what does the cross mean to you?

For many these days it’s just a shape/form they see regularly on church steeples, in cemeteries and also in jewellery. These are just some of the visual things that the word “cross” can conjure in our mind, however for me, the cross is so much more than just a visual image!

The cross certainly does not tell me that life will be easy and that I’ll never encounter difficulties or struggles. It doesn’t mean that God answers my prayers when or even in the way I want Him to!

The cross does however assure me that no matter what difficulties or problems I may be facing, God is with me through it all. In doing that if offers me the promise of eternal life. I know my family and friends and myself will not always stay safe and health, but because I believe in God, and in the power of the cross, I am assured that we will all see each other one day in eternity and God will wipe away our tears.

The cross means everything to me, Christ means everything to me – How about you?

You may have realised by now if you’ve been following my blog for any amount of time, that I love music and I have a lot of favourite songs. I make no apology for sharing so many of my favourite songs with you because I feel that if they can touch my heart, they are just as likely to touch your heart too…and when Christ is involved you never know what that may lead to!

Yesterday in Only Christ I shared with you another of my favourite song, In Christ Alone. There are some specific words from this song that touch me whenever I hear or sing this them…

What heights of love, what depths of peace
When fears are stilled, when strivings cease
My Comforter, my All in All
Here in the love of Christ I stand

And as He stands in victory
Sin’s curse has lost its grip on me
For I am His and He is mine
Bought with the precious blood of Christ

and my favourite words of all…

No power of hell, no scheme of man
Can ever pluck me from His hand
‘Till He returns or calls me home
Here in the power of Christ I’ll stand
