A couple of weeks ago I was out with a couple of friends and we got talking Salvation Army Christmas carolling. This in turn brought the conversation onto what our favourite and least favourite carols are.

This got me thinking about the number of times each Christmas we in a Salvation Army band, must play or be requested to play, the same carols over and over again. So much so that I’m sure everyone in an SA band must have specific carols that we hope we don’t need to play over and over again!

For some people though, Christmas carols is the only bit of God they hear or even know about – For example:

  • Silent Night teaches that Mary was a virgin when she became pregnant with Jesus and that jesus is the holy child
  • The shepherd’s came to the stable because The angel of the Lord came down and told them to head to the stable
  • We were told to Come All Ye Faithful because Born This Happy Morning was Christ The Lord

The True Meaning Of Christmas By M.S.Lowndes

Jesus Christ was born this day

So many years before

He came a servant to the lost,

Though he was Lord of Lords

We celebrate this joyous time,

Reflecting on His birth

Not born in a mansion, but a stable

As if He had no worth

He came so He could identify

With the human heart of man

And gave His life as a sacrifice,

Offering a better plan

A plan that reconciles us back

To our loving Father God,

Bringing hope and redemption from

Sins ruling, iron rod

For this is the only reason that we

Should celebrate this day,

To become focused on anything else,

Would take the meaning away

So let’s arise with joy in our hearts

And share it with everyone

The meaning of Christmas will always be

The birth of Jesus – God’s son

Can someone share a prayer with us please.

Mary and Joseph tried to find somewhere to stay in Bethlehem so Mary could give birth to Jesus, but it was so busy they couldn’t find anywhere to stay. That was, until one of the innkeepers offered them the one place they had left, a stable, where they would need to rest amongst the animals. At least that innkeeper let them in or the Christmas story may have been so different!

Just as the innkeeper let Mary and Joseph in to his stable, so Christ wants us to open our hearts and let Him into our lives. This Christmas let’s remember that Christ is Lord, and the Prince of Peace, so let Him into your life today.

I’ve done a few Word Associations with you over the last while, but as you’ll see from the title this is another Christmas word association today. It may be a Christmas edition word association, but it’s the same format, so I’m going to throw some words at you  and I want you to note down the first word that comes into your mind when you read each word.

So here goes…

  1. wordsSleigh
  2. Donkey
  3. Angel
  4. Christmas morning
  5. Card
  6. Cooking
  7. TV
  8. Elf
  9. Tree
  10. Home

So how did you get on with those words? Did you find it easy? Did your answers surprise you or were they just as you expected?

Well here’s my responses to my questions:

  1. Santa
  2. Nativity
  3. Mary
  4. Early
  5. Postage
  6. Hours
  7. Christmas films
  8. Film
  9. Tinsel
  10. Family

Were any of your answers the same as mine? Did any of my answers confuse you? Did any of your own answers confuse you?

I’ve said in previous word association posts that I find I get a bit stressed when I’m doing them as I put a lot of pressure on myself not to over think my answers! Are you relaxed when you do them or do you find it stressful too?

I still believe that when we respond with the first words that come into our minds, our answers tell us a lot about our emotional state, and what’s important to us at that particular point in time.

Bearing all this in mind, review your answers, does my theory hold true?

By the way, if you want me to explain any of my answers, just ask!

To you and I Jesus is God’s son, our Saviour, but to Mary he was more than that, he was her gift from God. I wonder how Mary felt knowing all the world would look to Jesus, knowing He was the Son of God?

I guess Mary felt many of the same feeling any mother would feel when their child achieves their goals or is successful in tasks they undertake: pride, delight, happiness, honour.

For me the song I shared today, Perfect Love (Mary’s Song) by Hillsong, encapsulates how Mary probably felt as she looked at the baby Jesus and thought about all that lay ahead for Him here on earth, as a mother’s love for their child is always something special – Perfect love!

My beautiful boy
Holiness I see
Perfect so pure
Your eyes they trust in me

All creation bows to You
The skies sing Your arriving
My precious Jesus

And You will walk this land
My precious gift from God
Showing all mankind
The only way to life

All creation sings Your praise
The angels will proclaim
My precious Jesus

All of heaven’s gaze is on You
The glory of God shines for all to see
The Son of God, the Son of man

You are perfection promised
Giver of life for all eternity
My little one, perfect love

Do you ever wonder how Mary felt when she was told she was going to give birth to the Son of God?

Mary was frightened and felt so alone, but even then she still put her full trust in God because she knew God there with her and would keep her strong. So follow Mary’s lead and rely on God to get you through the unknown this Christmas and in the coming year.

Breath of heaven by The Three Sopranos

I have traveled many moonless nights
Cold and weary with a babe inside
And I wonder what I’ve done
Holy Father, You have come
And chosen me now to carry Your Son

I am waiting in a silent prayer
I am frightened by the load I bear
In a world as cold as stone
Must I walk this path alone?
Be with me now, be with me now

Breath of Heaven, hold me together
Be forever near me, Breath of Heaven
Breath of Heaven, lighten my darkness
Pour over me Your holiness for You are holy
Breath of Heaven

Do you wonder as you watch my face
If a wiser one should have had my place?
But I offer all I am
For the mercy of Your plan
Help me be strong, help me be, help me

Breath of Heaven, hold me together
Be forever near me, Breath of Heaven
Breath of Heaven, lighten my darkness
Pour over me Your holiness for You are holy

Breath of Heaven, hold me together
Be forever near me, breath of Heaven
Breath of Heaven, lighten my darkness
Pour over me Your holiness for You are holy
Breath of Heaven, Breath of Heaven
Breath of Heaven

I don’t know about you, but when I’m asked to undertake something new which I’ve never done before, I usually feel nervous, anxious and sometimes even terrified. So now thinking back to the Christmas story when Mary was told she was going to fall pregnant and then give birth to the Son of God, imagine how Mary must have felt – All those emotions I just mentioned and so much more I would suggest!

I can’t imagine just how terrified and afraid Mary must have felt, but I do know is that Mary’s faith was strong, so she didn’t doubt that God knew what he was doing when he entrusted His Son to her, and believed He would protect her and guide her during her pregnancy. Mary could never have imagined all her son, God’s Son, would achieve.

What a strong faith Mary had! How is your faith?

Last Sunday in Imagine, I ask how willing we would be to take on the responsibility that Mary did, and considered the feelings and emotions Mary must have felt as she struggled to understand how she would cope with the responsibility God had asked her to taken on.

Today I want to consider Mary from a slightly different perspective, that of a mother. I’m sure Mary, just like most mother’s would have dreams and ambitions for her son, but for Mary, those dreams and ambitions were already determined by God so do you think she really knew or understood just what an impact the baby she was going to give birth to, would have on this world?

None of us really know what we can really achieve in our lives. We each have our dreams and ambitions, but ultimately what we will achieve in our lives is down to God’s plans for our lives, and our desire to do God’s will for our lives.

This Christmas, I ask you to consider whether you are following God’s plan for your life.

Mary Did You Know?

Mary did you know that your baby boy will some day walk on water?
Mary did you know that your baby boy will save our sons and daughters?
Did you know that your baby boy has come to make you new?
This child that you’ve delivered, will soon deliver you
.

Mary did you know that your baby boy will give sight to a blind man?
Mary did you know that your baby boy will calm a storm with his hand?
Did you know that your baby boy has walked where angels trod?
And when your kiss your little baby, you have kissed the face of God.

Oh Mary did you know

The blind will see, the deaf will hear, the dead will live again.
The lame will leap, the dumb will speak, the praises of the lamb

Mary did you know that your baby boy is Lord of all creation?
Mary did you know that your baby boy would one day rule the nations?
Did you know that your baby boy is heaven’s perfect Lamb?
This sleeping child you’re holding is the great I am

Can you imagine how Mary must have felt knowing she was to give birth to God’s son?

In the song Breath of Heaven we get a little bit of an insight into how Mary felt, and how she truly believed God would help her to be strong.

Overwhelmed, terrified, scared, lonely, inadequate but probably also excited about the Christ’s immanent arrival on earth. It’s not surprising Mary felt as she did about the huge responsibility that God had placed on her, but just like us these days, I‘m sure she came to realise that God would not have asked her to bear His son if he didn’t think she could handle the responsibility and pressure that put on her. She would feel so alone, because in those days, a woman who was pregnant out-of-wedlock was seen as something disgraceful, so she would have felt lonely  and outcast by her neighbours and friends. But she was wrong, as Joseph stood by her despite how others would see her.

How many of us would have done that if the penalty for doing so was to be spurned by those around you?

Glory to God by Hillsong

Let the earth rejoice
Heaven’s comes to you
While the city sleeps
A child is born

Drive away the fear

For you, Saviour has come
He lies in a bed
Made of straw
La la la la la la la
La la la la
La la la
La la la la la la

Glory to glory to God
In the highest
Glory to glory to God
In the highest
Glory, glory in the highest

Yesterday in Child of Love we considered the responsibility Mary and Joseph must have felt in raising their son, and God’s only Son.

Today it’s about you and me!

What does it mean to us that Jesus was born here on earth?

God sent a little bit of heaven to earth when Jesus was born in Bethlehem.

God sacrificed His only Son at Calvary so that we could be forgiven of our sins.

What greater thing could any father do, than sacrifice his only son’s life?

Glory to God for all He did for the world all those years ago, and all He continues to do for us now.

This Christmas, have you given said thank you to God for sending His son to earth? Have you given all glory to God?

Yesterday we celebrated the birth of Jesus Christ. Today we think about just what His birth meant to Mary, his mother – How must she have felt to know that in her arms she was holding the Son of God?

What an awesome responsibility Mary and Joseph had to nurture their son, God‘s Son. I don’t know about you, but I think I would have crumbled under the pressure, thankfully Mary and Joseph weren’t me, and they did a wonderful job of caring for and looking after Jesus as he grew from a baby into man who saved the world!

Child of Love

Child of wonder, close Your eyes
Rest here in my arms tonight
Someday You will save the world
But tonight I’ll hold You right here in my arms

Precious miracle of life, child of love
Gift of hope, the gift of light from the Father above
And You were made for all mankind
You will always be mine, child of love

Gabriel‘s promise has come true
God has blessed this world with You
And as I humbly hold You now
In my heart I know I’m holding Heaven’s child

Precious miracle of life, child of love
Gift of hope, the gift of light from the Father above
And You were made for all mankind
But You will always be mine, child of love

Precious miracle of life, child of love
Gift of hope, the gift of light from the Father above
And You were made for all mankind
But You will always be mine, child of love

Child of wonder, close Your eyes
