Is today, “Just another day” for you?

Can I suggest that everyday should never be “Just another day”.

Maybe we go through the same routine everyday. e.g. get up, breakfast, shower, get dressed, drive to work, work, drive home, make dinner, watch tv, go to bed and then repeat. But just because every day we do the same things, still doesn’t make every day “Just another day”.

While we may do the same routine each day, those we meet and interact with may vary, and even if some of them are the same, how each of those people feel each day, may vary widely, and that’s what make every day, not just another day.

Each day we must consider those around us, how they are feeling, what issues they may be dealing with which we know nothing about. So be considerate and compassionate at all times, because we do not know what anyone else is going through.

That moment when you get into work in the morning, you press in the button on your computer to turn it on, and then realise you left it on the previous day because a job you were running on it, hadn’t finished when you left the office and you needed to let it finish successfully.

I assume you realise what the problem is with what I’ve described? Yes, I’d pressed the on/off button on my pc to allegedly turn it on, but instead, because it was on, as soon as I released the button, my pc was going to shut down before I could see whether the job I’d left running on it the day before had finished, and if it had finished successfully.

So realising what was about to happen, I then proceeded to do a bit of a conjuring act, as with one finger I continued to hold in the on/off button so my pc didn’t turn off, while with my other hand, tried to turn on my monitors and type in my login/password information so I could then see the results of the job that I’d left running.

After getting the details I needed, I obviously then had to release the on/off button and shut down my pc, as I certainly could be a contortionist all day!

I’ve actually done this a few times, and ended up having to stick post-it notes over the on/off button of my pc reminding me not to turn it off, to try to stop me having repeat of this ‘moment when’.

These days, most ‘jobs’ run on remote servers which our pcs are simply connecting to, so turning off your pc/laptop isn’t the same issue it once was.

That moment when you’ve gone out somewhere, look down at your feet and realised, you’ve got two different shoes on!

Have you ever done that? I have! A number of years ago I went to work with two different shoes on – I only realised as I was getting out my car after I parked the car at work. The stupidest thing about it was they were different colours, different styles and had different sizes of heels, so how on earth did I not notice they were different when I put them on! I remember I felt so stupid and immediate jumped straight back into the car, imagining ‘everyone’ had noticed.

Needless to say I don’t think anyone actually noticed even although there were a few others around, getting out their cars and heading into the nearby offices. Of course me being me, I couldn’t possibly go into the office with two different shoes on could I?

Well you’re right, I didn’t go into the office with two different shoes on…but what did I do? Well I realised I had a pair of old tatty shoes in the boot of my car, which I’d taken out the office a number of weeks beforehand. The choice was two different shoes, or a pair of tatty worn shoes…I went for the tatty old shoes as at least they were a matching pair!

Have you ever gone out anywhere wearing different shoes? If so when did you realise and what did you do?

I’ve done a few Word Associations with you over the last few months, and today, it’s time for another one. So as usual I’m going to throw some words at you  and I want you to note down the first word that comes into your mind when you read each word.

So here goes…

  1. wordsSunburn
  2. Nature
  3. Language
  4. Suit
  5. Heater
  6. Lunch
  7. Weekend
  8. Disney
  9. Customers
  10. Noah

So how did you get on with those words? Did you find it easy? Did your answers surprise you or were they just as you expected?

Well here’s my responses to my questions:

  1. Ouch!
  2. God
  3. English
  4. Work
  5. Nice and warm
  6. Soup
  7. Over too quickly
  8. Tigger
  9. Service
  10. Ark

Were any of your answers the same as mine? Did any of my answers confuse you? Did any of your own answers confuse you?

I’ve said in previous word association posts that I find I get a bit stressed when I’m doing them as I put a lot of pressure on myself not to over think my answers! Are you relaxed when you do them or do you find it stressful too?

I still believe that when we respond with the first words that come into our minds, our answers tell us a lot about our emotional state, and what’s important to us at that particular point in time.

Bearing all this in mind, review your answers, does my theory hold true?

Lord Jesus, as I enter this workplace I bring your presence with me, I speak Your peace, Your grace, and Your perfect order into the atmosphere of this office. I acknowledge Your Lordship over all that will be spoken, thought, decided, and accomplished within these walls.

Lord Jesus, I thank You for the gifts You have deposited in me. I do not take them lightly, but commit to using them responsibly and well.

Give me a fresh supply of truth and beauty; on which to draw as I do my job.

Anoint my creativity, my ideas, my energy so that even my smallest task may bring you honor.

Lord, when I’m confused, guide me, when I’m weary, energize me. Lord, when I’m burned out, infuse me with the light of Your Holy Spirit.

May the work I do and the way I do it, bring hope, life, and courage to all that I come in contact with today.

And Oh Lord, even in this day’s most stressful moments, may I rest in You.

In the name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, I pray.

Amen

What a wonderful prayer.I’ve printed it off and will pray that prayer each morning when I arrive in the office.

I pray that I may live that prayer, not just at work but in every situation I find myself in. I pray you too might have found inspiration in this prayer.

What a Week

What kind of week have you had?

My week has felt very long indeed. I was only in my office on Monday and Tuesday and then have spent the last few days visiting a number of office throughout North Lanarkshire to carry out some setup work and then train folk on how to use their new IT system.

The week started with a full day’s seminar/overview of some new software we are planning to use in the coming weeks/months, so that was quite a long day. Then on Tuesday I spent in my own office at my own desk getting on with my work. And that was when normality ended this week!

Yesterday morning I spent over 3 hours travelling to one of our offices…an journey that should have taken me about 45-50 minutes!!!  Fortunately I had less problems on my journey home as it only took me an hour.

On Wednesday after doing installs and training all day I spent the evening at one of our other offices while engineers installed some hardware – Boy was that a long day as I didn’t get home until after 9pm! I don’t think I’ve recovered from that long day yet.

Funny how the best laid plans for this week ended up totally inadequate due to unforseen circumstances – why do things like that happen, no matter how much we plan?

There’s only one person who’s plans once made, never change, and that’s God’s – He plans every breathe we take, every thought we have, every word we say and every action we take…however it’s up to us to do them. If we stray from God’s plan for our life, we will never find true happiness in our life. Put your life fully in God’s hands today, and He will bring you true happiness, forever.

Back to Work

Today was my first day back at work after being on leave for just over a week. Like most people after being off, I wished I didn’t have to go back to work today, so it was a bit of an effort to get out of bed this morning.

Having got myself to work, I found myself having to deal with a number of things which always seem to happen/have happened when I go back to work. Are these just things that happen in my office?

  • The mystery of the missing stapler – the one you left in your desk that is now nowhere to be found…and no one claims to have used it!
  • Where are all your pens?
  • Your chair is either:
    – Not at your desk – it’s been moved to someone else’s desk
    – Has been adjusted so the height/tilt etc is not how you like it!
  • There’s a pile of documents/magazines on your desk that aren’t yours, and you didn’t ask for them – it turns out they’ve just been left there because “your desk was free”
  • The coffee “thief” has returned – You seem to have less coffee left than you thought you had been you went on holiday!
  • Your email inbox is full to overflowing and it takes most of the day to work your way through them and determine which are spam, which have been dealt with by someone else, which you need to action and which are purely for information only
  • You have at least one voicemail message from someone telling you they require you to call them urgently, despite your voicemail message indicating you’re on holiday until today
  • And finally, but probably worst of all…your own personal mug has disappeared!

So, is this just my office these things happen in? Any feedback would be much appreciated.

You’ll be please to know that by the time I left work tonight I had found my mug…someone had put it in a cupboard in the kitchen beside the “visitor” mugs!!! D’oh!

My mug is a blue version of this…

Despite the pitfalls off returning to work after being off, I know I am one of the lucky ones these days to still have a job to go to. With that in mind I’d ask that today you pray for those who are unemployed and those who are struggling to cope financially in these difficult economic times.
