Are you looking for simple ways to encourage your heart and nourish your soul?

In the last while I’ve given you some ideas which will hopefully inspire you to implement them in your own life, and over the coming weeks I’ll share some others with you.

So here’s today’s suggestion:

Promote optimism

Life always seems better when you focus on the positive things rather than seeing only the negative. So to that end whenever you find yourself focusing on the negative things around you, stop yourself, and try to see some positives in the situation. I totally understand that that can be much easier said than done in many circumstances, however, there is always a positive to every negative situations, so look hard and look deep and you will find the positive.

When  you are positive or optimistic about situations you feel better and that in turn definitely brightens your day.

Think positive

I read the following quote by J. Sidlow Baxter recently:

What is the difference between an obstacle and an opportunity? Our attitude toward it. Every opportunity has a difficulty, and every difficulty has an opportunity.

Yes, it’s all about how we look at things isn’t it? If we have a positive outlook and look for the good in everything, and the opportunities they present to us, we are more likely to achieve our targets and succeed.

positive attitude

Positive and NegativeYou cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.

You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.

You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.

You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling the wage payer down.

You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.

You cannot build character and courage by taking away people’s initiative and independence.

You cannot help people permanently by doing for them, what they could and should do for themselves.

Abraham Lincoln

Wise words from a wise man. I think the words are even more effective because it tells us what’s not possible, however part of me is saying that this makes the whole things very negative, when, if we are trying to improve the world and the people in it, should we not be looking for the positive and good in everything rather than accentuating the negative things in life.

Look for the positives in everyone, because there is a positive to be found in everyone if we look hard enough!

Little people belittle people. Great people make people feel great – Rick Warren

Very true!

Those who belittle others are the ones who can cause the most damage to people’s self belief and confidence and can cause them to dismiss their dreams as unachievable. Whereas those who make others feel great do the complete opposite…they build other’s confidence and belief in themselves and what they can achieve.

Don’t let those who belittle others feel important, as their comments and opinions do nothing to help others or you.

Let’s all try to give positive feedback and comments to others so that they can have the confidence to try to achieve all their goals. After all even if goals are not achieved, isn’t it better to have tries and failed, than never to have tried at all and left wondering what might have been?

I recently heard someone quote the following, and have since found myself thinking about it quite a lot…

If Christians spent as much time praying as grumbling, they would soon have nothing to grumble about.~ Unknown

What do you think?

Well the first thing I want to say is, yes, I know I moan about things just as much (if not more) than the next person. I could try and justify myself by saying that these last few years have been very tough ones for myself, my hubby and my Mum and Dad on the health front, but that would simply be me making excuses.

At the end of the day, what do I gain from moaning or grumbling? Not a lot other than a whole lot of negativity, which if you refer back to my blog post last Saturday (Negativity) you’ll find I spoke about how the negativity of those around us can bring us down – and that folks it not what I want to do today or any other day.

Imagine a world where instead of moaning or grumbling, we got down on our knees and prayed – Are you smiling now thinking of the folk who seem to moan constantly being on their knees all the time?! I am! Keep that smile going and keep those happy and positive thoughts going, it will make a difference to you and those around you.

Let’s all try and stop grumbling and moaning and try and have a positive impact on those around us instead of spreading our own negativity.

I read somewhere a few days ago that watching or listening to one hour of news each day adds up to us taking in 15 full days of negative information in a year.

Wow – 15 days of your life lost every year to negative information, just by listening/watching one hour of news each day.

So that’s accounted for one hour of each of your day, but what about the rest of your day, how much negative information do you take in during the rest of your day?

What are you allowing to influence you?

It can be difficult at times to ensure that we only allow positive people to surround us and influence us. Sometimes it can be members of our family, neighbours or work mates who bring us down.

So what can we do to stop the negative people influencing us?

Unfortunately I don’t have a magic answer to this question. All I can say is that we must try and not let the negativity from these folk get into our hearts. In other words we must try to stay positive no matter what others say or do.

I know it’s not easy to do that all the time, but with God‘s help we can stay strong and stay positive no matter what those around us are saying or doing.

Are you a positive or a negative person? Do you always look on the bright side of every situation or do you tend to see or focus on the things that could go wrong in every situation?

It’s often said that if you look positively on every circumstance it will lift your mood. As we all live such busy lives these days, it can often be difficult to cope with what life throws our way. God can help us to be more positive in our lives. After all He’s there and willing to share all our problems and help us through.

When your having a difficult time, do you stop to think about the good things that are happening or do you find yourself concentrating on your difficulties? No matter how bad you think your circumstances are, remember there’s always someone worse off than you! Here’s just a few example of a few things that may be positives in your life that you can be grateful for, even in your darkest times:

  • enough food to eat
  • a roof over your head
  • family
  • friends
  • a job
  • God’s love

Remember that God is the one who provides for you, so thank Him for all that’s good in your life. I’m sure that even during your lowest times you will still be able to find one blessing, one thing to thank God for.

The well known hymn Count Your Blessings” is one that expresses the sentiments I’ve stated. I hope you enjoy this version of this song…

When upon life’s billows
You are tempest tossed
When you are discouraged,
Thinking all is lost
Count your many blessings,
Name them one by one
And it will surprise you
What the Lord has done.

Count your blessings,
Name them one by one
Count your blessings,
See what God has done
Count your blessings,
Name them one by one
Count your many blessings,
See what God has done.

Are you ever burdened
With a load of care?
Does the cross seem heavy
You are called to bear?
Count your many blessings,
Ev’ry doubt will fly
And you will be singing
As the days go by.

Count your blessings,
Name them one by one
Count your blessings,
See what God has done
Count your blessings,
Name them one by one
Count your many blessings,
See what God has done.

When you look at others
With their lands and gold
Think that Christ has promised
You His wealth untold
Count your many blessings,
Money cannot buy
Your reward in heaven,
Nor your home on high.

Count your blessings,
Name them one by one
Count your blessings,
See what God has done
Count your blessings,
Name them one by one
Count your many blessings,
See what God has done.

So, amid the conflict,
Whether great or small
Do not be discouraged,
God is over all
Count your many blessings,
Angels will attend
Help and comfort give you
To your journey’s end.

Count your blessings,
Name them one by one
Count your blessings,
See what God has done
Count your blessings,
Name them one by one
Count your many blessings,
See what God has done.

Well I should have known better…write a blog about the wonderful sunny weather we’re having and what happens…within a day the sun’s gone and it’s wet and dull again! Sorry!

I said in my blog yesterday that when it’s sunny it seems to lift our spirits and make everything seem a bit brighter. Well today I think I’ve seen the opposite apply:

  • Damp and wet this morning when I left for work which after the weather of the last few days, made it less appealing to go out in.
  • I then got stuck in a traffic jam for a while because part of a raod had been shut because of a collapsed man hole.
  • That in turn meant I got to work much later than I was supposed to.
  • The air conditioning in my office is broken and needs a part which won’t be available until Monday, so the office is like a sauna again.
  • Had to go out at lunchtime to get a birthday card for my Dad, forgot my umbrella so got soaked.
  • Had a meeting this afternoon which went on until about 5.45pm, by which time my head was thumping.

So dull and damp outside today. Feeling pretty down today too as it’s been a very long day, I’m exhausted and a lot of things I was involved in to day just didn’t quite go as planned.

Sunny bright days outside seem to make it easier to be positive, so when you’re having a “grey” day, don’t focus on the negative things around you, think of a time when you were happy and try and stay positive. Pray! God doesn’t desert you when you’re having a bad day, He’s there to help you make everyday a sunny day.

Stay positive no matter how your weather looks!

By the way, Tigger’s back to sleeping on our bed again as the window doesn’t seem so appealing today!
