I was listening again to the the song We Believe by Newsboys, and one phrase in the song really stuck with me this time

So, let our faith be more than anthems
Greater than the songs we sing

It got me thinking about my faith, and the reason I attend church. In the Salvation Army we can at times put a lot of our focus on our musical sections (both our junior and adult bands and choirs). This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, as our musical sections can most definitely make a huge contribution to our worship through their music.

I personally find the music provided by our musical sections, as well as the congregational songs used in  worship often bring me closer to God, and being able to be part of that music making is a great privilege for me, as I believe this how God wants me to contribute to worship.

What the words of this Newsboys song reminded me was that I must never let the music or music making be the reason I worship. Worship must be first and foremost about praising God and learning more about Him. Yes, we can praise God through our music making, but that should not be the main reason we go to church. Our faith must definitely be more than anthems, more than the music.

The difficult times come, praising God can feel like the last thing you want to do. However if we don’t trust God through the difficult times, can we be sure we can survive the storm?

Life storms often come one after another making feel more and more like they will never end. When that happens that is often a time of great challenge, and questioning God why he’s let this happen to us, and even why he’s not stopping this from happening.

Without going through storms, would our faith ever truly be tested or challenged? In turn could we ever be sure our faith is secure enough to survive a storm?

Storms whether weather or life related are not the nicest thing to go through, however whenever I doubt whether I can get through a storm, I remind myself that a few years ago I believed there was no point in carrying on, but I survived and I now realised that even in those darkest of days, God was with me, he hadn’t deserted me, as I thought he had. God never gave up on me, even when I felt like I’d given up on myself and on him.

So even when you seem to be facing never-ending storms in life, don’t give up, just keep on believing, because God is with you, and will get you through those days.

Praise You In This StormThunderstorms

I was sure by now
God, You would have reached down
And wiped our tears away, stepped in and saved the day
But once again, I say, “Amen” and it’s still raining

But as the thunder rolls
I barely hear Your whisper through the rain, “I’m with you”
And as Your mercy falls I’ll raise my hands
And praise the God who gives and takes away

And I’ll praise You in this storm and I will lift my hands
For You are who You are no matter where I am
And every tear I’ve cried You hold in Your hand
You never left my side and though my heart is torn
I will praise You in this storm

I remember when I stumbled in the wind
You heard my cry, You raised me up again
But my strength is almost gone
How can I carry on if I can’t find You

But as the thunder rolls
I barely hear You whisper through the rain, “I’m with you”
And as You mercy falls I’ll raise my hands
And praise the God who gives and takes away

And I’ll praise You in this storm and I will lift my hands
For You are who You are no matter where I am
And every tear I’ve cried You hold in Your hand
You never left my side and though my heart is torn
I will praise You in this storm

I lift my eyes unto the hills
Where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord
The Maker of Heaven and Earth

I lift my eyes unto the hills
Where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord
The Maker of Heaven and Earth

And I’ll praise You in this storm and I will lift my hands
For You are who You are no matter where I am
And every tear I’ve cried You hold in Your hand
You never left my side and though my heart is torn
I will praise You in this storm
And though my heart is torn
I will praise You in this storm

That’s a great quote isn’t it! It’s true though, we can learn the most about ourselves when we’re going through difficult times. It’s also the time when we can feel furthest from God, even though He’s still there right beside us.

God is with us always, and no matter how dark life may get, He can help us rebuild our lives. It’s when we get through those tough times that we often realise that it was really God who got us through those dark days.

God rebuilds lives, and He can help you rebuild your’s today.

I’ve had questions without answers
I’ve known sorrow, I have known pain
But there’s one thing that I cling to
You are faithful, Jesus You’re true

When hope is lost, I call You Saviour
When pain surrounds, I call You Healer
When silence falls
You’ll be the song within my heart

In the lone hour of my sorrow
Through the darkest night of my soul
You surround me, and sustain me
My defender for ever more

When hope is lost, I call You Saviour
When pain surrounds, I call You Healer
When silence falls
You’ll be the song within my heart

And I will praise You, I will praise You
When the tears fall still I will sing to You

I will praise You, Jesus praise You
Through the suffering still I will sing to You

When hope is lost, I call You Saviour
When pain surrounds, I call You Healer
When silence falls
You’ll be the song within my heart

I will praise You, I will praise You
When the tears fall still I will sing to you
I will praise You, Jesus I will praise You
Through the suffering still I will sing to You
I will sing to You, Jesus I’ll sing to You

When the laughter fails to comfort
When my heart aches, Lord are You be there
When confusion is all around me
And the darkness is my closest friend
Still I’ll praise You, Jesus praise You

Theses are the words from Tim Hughes’ song When the Tears Fall. I love this song, as the words are just so personal to me, as I have felt exactly the way this song describes.

I am just grateful that my faith in God has been strong so that I could put my full trust in Him to see me through those darkest of days.

How about you, do you still praise Jesus even when your heart is aching?

God is worthy of our praise, so let’s make sure we praise His name!

In praising God, we not only show him how much we love him, but we also reinforce to ourselves our love of God.

Morning has broken

Morning has broken
Like the first morning
Blackbird has spoken
Like the first bird
Praise for the singing
Praise for the morning
Praise for them springing
Fresh from the world

Sweet the rain’s new fall
Sunlit from Heaven
Like the first dewfall
On the first grass
Praise for the sweetness
Of the wet garden
Sprung in completeness
Where His feet pass

Morning has broken
Like the first dawn
Sing Hallelujah
A new day is born

Mine is the sunlight
Mine is the morning
Born of the one light
Eden saw play
Praise with elation
Praise every morning
God’s recreation
Of the new day

Morning has broken
Like the first dawn
Sing Hallelujah
A new day is born
Morning has broken
Morning has broken

Words of an old hymn which I’m sure many of us are very familiar with, but is it a hymn that’s still relevant today?

Of course it is, the words in themselves are a reminder once again that each new day is a gift from God, and as such we must praise and thank God for each new day.

Just as the words are still relevant today, the song itself is just as listenable now as it ever was – I personally like this arrangement of it by Third Day:

Ever felt that just when you think you’ve made it through one of life’s storms, another one, and then another one follow, and the circle seems unending?

Well that’s how I’ve been feeling recently, and, if I’m honest, I’ve questioned several times whether I have the energy and the fight to survive another storm. However whenever I doubt whether I can carry on, I remember a few years ago when I really did believe I couldn’t carry on anymore, and remind myself that it was God who got me through those difficult years even though I felt as though He had deserted me, He never gave up on me!

So even when you seem to be facing never-ending storms in life, don’t give up, just keep on believing, because God is with you.

When you hear the word storm, what do you think of?

The ocean, a ship being tossed about by the waves; a thunderstorm, thunder and lighting, and torrential rain?

But what if I told you I am thinking more specifically about the storms of life, what images does that bring to your mind?

Despair, depression, stress, bereavement, money problems, ill-health etc?

We all face storms in our lives at some time, so how do we cope? We should of course turn to God. Sadly though, many of us think those are the times when God seems distant to us, but in fact it’s the complete opposite, because God has promised to be there for us during those times:

Isaiah 43:2 ~ God will carry your through the storm

The following song Praise You In This Storm by Casting Crowns became very special to me when I was going through what seemed like a never-ending storm, I pray you may find comfort and strength in the words and music also:

Praise the Lord from the Heavens
Praise Him in the skies
Praise the Lord from the Heavens
All you stars of light
Praise Him all His Angels
Praise Him all His hosts
Let all Creation praise the Lord

Praise the Lord from the mountain tops
Praise Him in the streets
Praise the Lord from the valleys
And tell everyone You see
Tell them of his greatness
And tell them of His love
Let all Creation praise the Lord

You may not be aware of it, or you may not think of it on a daily basis, but God has done amazing things for you. He therefore is more than worthy of our praise. So let’s make sure we say thanks to God on a regular basis for all He has done and continues to do for us each day.

Praise the Lord!

I’m sure we’ve all heard the following verses from scripture, many times:

For God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son so that anyone who believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16)

but have you really considered what that really meant for Christ?

This Easter can I ask that you consider the following feelings and emotions that Christ must have experienced on that first Easter:

  • pain
  • anguish
  • disappointment, that the world hadn’t accepted his message
  • scared, not for himself, but for the world

Can you imagine feeling as Christ did, but still being willing to die to just for you and me? I can’t, and that is why Christ’s death at Calvary shows what a huge sacrifice God was willing to pay for us.

For He made us a way
by which we have been saved
He’s the Saviour of the world
So we lift up a shout for his fame and renown
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord
Jesus, Saviour of the world

We praise God this Easter, for sending Jesus to the world and dying such a slow painful death, just so we could be forgiven. Don’t let Christ’s pain be in vain this Easter, let God into your heart today.
