Do you know any ordinary heroes?

If so, what it is about them that makes you consider them to be an “ordinary hero”?

Here’s Christopher Reeve‘s definition of what makes someone an ordinary hero:

A hero is an ordinary person who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles

ordinary hero

For me, that definition helped me to realise that, despite my initial feelings that I didn’t know any “ordinary heroes”, I couldn’t have been more wrong.

I hope that as you’ve thought about people you know who are ordinary heroes, you’ve realised that they are in fact so much more any ordinary heroes…they are in fact extra-ordinary heroes!

How’s your week been? Busy? Quick?

Well my week at work has been one of those where I’ve been really really busy, but now the week’s over I can’t actually list you anything I’ve achieved!

It’s funny how we get weeks like that isn’t it? It’s been a weeks where I’ve just had one thing after another to do, with not much time to stop and take breath, or assess what I have or haven’t achieved.

I always find it funny how when you’re really busy you feel as if you’ve achieved little, but when you’ve had a bit more time to focus and do your own thing, it often feels like you’ve achieved more. Imagine what it would be like if we combined those two things. i.e. Achievement with constantly busy…

If we did all the things we are capable of doing, we would astonish ourselves.

Yeah! Imagine we were always focused on our work and constantly completing our allocated tasks and achieving other objectives too…wouldn’t that be amazing! I guess our workmates and managers would wonder what’s happened to us all if we all started over achieving!

Anyway, after an extra busy week at work, I’m glad to have a couple of days of no work…mind you that doesn’t mean I’m not busy with other important family things!

I’m hoping for a slightly less busy week at work next week, but ‘ll be surprised if that happens as looks like we’ll be moving office!

Someone recently said to me, “If you’re hurting–you’re growing”.

I must be honest and say that when they told me that, I laughed (in disbelief) as I couldn’t understand how I can possibly be growing just because I’m hurting. However on considering this a bit more, I realised that this statement is probably true.

After all how do you learn to deal with hurt and disappointment, except by experiencing them, as you can’t really teach someone how to cope with these things.

Therefore, when you’re hurting, don’t forget that by dealing with your hurt, you are in fact gaining real life experience and so are growing as a person.

The other thing to always remember when you’re hurting is that you are not alone…Draw nearer to God & let Him be your strength.

As I spoke about in In Need of a Hero, I think we all need a hero at some point in our life – a brave strong person who will never let us down. As youngsters we find role models who we want to try to emulate, while as adults we probably identify our hero as someone who has achieved something we wish we could achieve or someone we wish we were more like – Either way, young or older, we all still consciously or subconsciously have heroes or role models in our life.

There’s only one problem with the role models or heroes we often choose for ourselves…they can quickly and easily to something to make them go from being a hero to meaning nothing to us. All it takes it one word, or one action and any kudos the person has acquired can easily be shattered.

Although many role models and heroes can often let us down, Jesus never will. So if you’re looking for a true hero who will never let you down, make Jesus your hero today.

Who or what do you think of when you hear the word “hero“?

Well here’s the dictionary definition of a hero:

  • a man distinguished by exceptional courage, nobility, fortitude, etc
  • a man who is idealized for possessing superior qualities in any field
  • (Myth & Legend / Classical Myth & Legend) Classical myth a being of extraordinary strength and courage, often the offspring of a mortal and a god, who is celebrated for his exploits
  • the principal male character in a novel, play, etc.

Do you need a hero?

Sometimes life can be so tough and there seems no way to get through it. That’s when we could all use a hero, strong brave person who will never let us down.

Who is there like that?

Let Jesus be your hero today!
