A number of years ago when I was Songster accompanist and then later when I was Songster Leader at Rutherglen Salvation Army, one of my favourite songs was an arrangement of the following song by Herbert Howard Booth from our songbook:

kneel at crossI bring my heart to Jesus, with its fears,
With its hopes and feelings, and its tears;
Him it seeks, and finding it is blest;
Him it loves, and loving, is at rest.
Walking with my Saviour, heart in heart,
None can part.
I bring my life to Jesus, with its care,
And before his footstool, leave it there;
Faded are its treasures, poor and dim;
It is not worth living without him,
More than life is Jesus, love and peace,
Ne’er to cease.
I bring my sins to Jesus, as I pray
That his blood will wash them all away;
While I seek for favour at his feet,
And with tears his promise still repeat,
He doth tell me plainly: Jesus lives
And forgives.
I bring my all to Jesus; he hath seen
How my soul desireth to be clean.
Nothing from his alter I withhold
When his cross of suffering I behold;
And the fire descending brings to me

It was not just the beautiful musical arrangement of the song I liked but also the words, particularly the second verse where it talks about us bringing our whole life before God because He loves us, and has promised to love us forever. And because of that we need to let Him help us make our lives worthwhile.

Here’s the International Staff Songsters of the Salvation Army singing this wonderful arrangement of I Bring Them To Jesus:

God doesn’t care about our past and the wrongs we may have done then, He cares about us now and more than that He cares about our future, so let Him be your everything, and bring your all before Him today.

What’s the best news you’ve ever been given? Maybe the news that you’ve passed your exams, or someone you care about telling you they love you?

Those things may be great news, but the best news that you will ever come to acknowledge, is that God loves you!

God’s love is unconditional unlike the love we experience from so many people during our lives. You don’t even need to do anything for God to love you, because before you were even born, God knew you and promised to love you always.

How Loved Am I by Lara Martin

O Lord, you are my keeper,
I will never be in want;
You hold me close, so tender,
And quiet me with love.
And I hear You singing over me,
I hear You singing over me.

Songs of countless promises,
Like kisses from heaven they fall.
‘How loved am I.’
Songs that take me to higher heights,
Such favour I know is divine.
‘How loved am I, how loved am I.’

O Lord, You are my keeper,
My heart is safe with You.
Though in life there will be valleys,
You take my hand and lead me through.

I’ve always found this a really strange saying:

Wrong place, wrong time

Even when I was much younger I remember it always confused me how you could be in the wrong place at the wrong time as surely you were just in the right place but maybe at the wrong time, indeed in the wrong place at just the right time!

Doesn’t God tells us that He always places us just where He needs us?

I’m reminded of a chorus of a song from our Salvation Army songbook which says:

Just where he needs me, my Lord has placed me,
Just where he needs me, there would I be!
And since he found me, by love he’s bound me
To serve him joyfully.

Maybe we just need to remind ourselves sometimes that wherever we find ourselves, God has put us there for a reason!

I was looking through my Salvation Army song book yesterday looking for a particular song which had been going through my mind most of the day, when a little card fell out of my song book. Here is what it said:

The kind and special
things you do –
your caring,
thoughtful way
reflect much more
of His great love
than words could
ever say.
Thank you!

I turned the card over where I found it was addressed to me, but unfortunately it didn’t indicate who had given it to me.

This got me thinking, firstly to remember who had given me the card as the words where so beautiful as if I’d really touch someone, but also to thinking about whether there have been other times when I’ve done something special for someone.

We may not always be aware of the times when we have truly “meant the world” to someone, but God knows, and He loves us for it.

I pray that God will use me to make a difference (even just a small one) in someone’s life.

I also pray that I will remember to say “Thank you” to those who “mean the world” to me, as it is great encouragement to know when you have made that kind of difference in someone’s life.

Be that special, caring person today and every day.

Don’t Just Sing

Picture the scene…

You’re sitting in church.
The leader says your going to “join together and sing” song number x.
The introduction is played.
You stand.
You sing the word of the song.
The song finishes you sit down.
The service continues.
You maybe sing two or three more songs, and go through the same steps as those above each time.

Now think back to a time you were in the above situation…when you were singing those songs, how much attention were you actually paying to the words you were singing?

If I’m honest, I am very guilty of not thinking about what I’m actually singing! I’d say I’m particularly prone to doing this when we sing songs I know well so don’t need to keep looking at the words, or checking the next line of the song.

Is this what God wants? I doubt it! We shouldn’t sing songs praising God, or asking for God’s help etc without actually meaning and believing what we are singing. Maybe if we are not feeling lie we can praise God, or believe he can help us we shouldn’t insult God by singing those words as if we believe them.

Sing to God, but do it from your heart believing what you’re singing. Don’t sing just because you feel you should, put your heart and soul into it!

Lord, keep us from just singing, and move us into action!

God of Justice by Tim Hughes

God of Justice, Saviour to all
Came to rescue the weak and the poor
Chose to serve and not be served

Jesus, You have called us
Freely we’ve received
Now freely we will give

We must go live to feed the hungry
Stand beside the broken
We must go
Stepping forward keep us from just singing
Move us into action

We must go

To act justly everyday
Loving mercy in every way
Walking humbly before You God

You have shown us, what You require
Freely we’ve received
Now freely we will give

Fill us up and send us out
Fill us up and send us out
Fill us up and send us out Lord

Raise Me Up

When life is a struggle, all we need to do is turn to God. It sounds so easy doesn’t it, but it can be hard when you’re not used to admitting that you need God’s help. But God doesn’t care whether you’ve never asked for His help or have needed Him every day, He will be there for you…He will always be there for you to raise you up.

Please watch the following video of Selah singing You Raise Me Up, it’s a fantastic song and this is a superb video showing images of where God is at work.

You Raise Me Up by Selah

When I am down, and oh my soul, so weary.
When troubles come, and my heart burdened be.
Then I am still and wait here in the silence.
Until You come and sit awhile with me.

You raise me up so I can stand on mountains.
You raise me up to walk on stormy seas.
I am strong when I am on your shoulders.
You raise me up to more than I can be.

You raise me up so I can stand on mountains.
You raise me up to walk on stormy seas.
I am strong when I am on your shoulders.
You raise me up to more than I can be.

There is no life to life without its hunger.
Each restless heart beats so imperfectly.
But when you come and I am filled with wonder.
Sometimes I think I glimpse eternity.

How much do you think God loves you?
Do you even know that God loves you?

Think about the person or people in your life you love you most…
God loves you more than that!
Think about the person or people in your life you love you most and multiply a million times…
God loves you more than that!

God loves me more than I could every comprehend.
God loves you more than I’m sure you could ever comprehend.

Do not ever underestimate how much God loves you and how much God can do for you. God loves you as a father loves his child. We each are God’s children, so believe in God, believe in His love.

The Way Ahead

When We Cannot See Our Way
When we cannot see our way,
Let us trust and still obey;
He who bids us forward go,
Cannot fail the way to show.

Though it be the gloom of night,
Though we see no ray of light,
Since the Lord himself is there,
‘Tis not meet that we should fear.

Be it ours, then, while we’re here,
Him to follow without fear,
Where he calls us, there to go,
What he bids us, that to do.

There have been many times during the last few years when my life has not been very easy and I have questioned “why?”. At these times a number of folk have directed me to the above song. I thank them for that as the words of the the 3 verses I’ve written above have brought comfort and reassurance to me during the darker times in my life.
