Kind words are short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless. – Mother Teresa

In the last few days I’ve talked about how our words, and how we say them can impact other people’s lives, and not necessarily for the better!

Today’s thought is far more positive as you have hopefully realised by the quote from Mother Teresa I shared at the start of this post. It’s easy for us to kind, we only need to say a few words but those kind words may be the thing that makes a huge difference to the person we say them to.

For example, someone may be having a really difficult time, struggling with life or health issues, and may feel as if no one really cares about them or how they are feeling. So imagine the boost they will get when someone says a few kind words of encouragement to them.

We may never fully appreciate or realise the impact our words may have on someone, so let’s make sure the words we use and the way we say them, are ones of encouragement and support.

In the last couple of days I’ve looked at things that cause us to shed a tear (in Tears) and at how words can cause great hurt and upset but can also be a source of great comfort (in The Power of Words. So words are an important means of communication to us, they can comfort, encourage, teach, direct, advise. We must use them wisely.

The Bible is God‘s means of communicating with us through the medium of the written word, and as such should be a source of great inspiration, direction anc comfort for every Christian.

I read the following recently:

There are things to see in the Word of God that our eyes can only see through the lens of tears – John Piper

When I first read this statement it confused me, and so I spent some time thinking about what it actually meant – I may not have understood this sentence in the manner intended by the writer, however he’s what I took out of this statement:

Much of what we read in the bible can be interpreted and understood at any time, whenever it is read, however there are some parts of the bible that we can only truly understand when we have actually experienced specific situations/events. i.e. We have to have been there, got the t-shirt. In other words we must have felt those same emotions and shed some tears, to truly understand God’s message.

Let your emotions allow you to feel and understand God’s message to you today. Take a fresh look at the Bible and experience it through your own life experiences.

You Write The Words by FFH

(Chorus)
I don’t know what to say
That hasn’t already been said
I don’t know what to write
That hasn’t already been read
I don’t know what to play
That You haven’t already heard
So here’s my song, You write the words
Here’s my heart, You write the words

Amazing Grace has already been written
Jesus saves has been done before
And the Hallelujah Chorus
Has been sung a million times or more
So who am I to make any difference
Tell me why I pour out my heart
And struggle for the words
That I know might not go very far

(Chorus)

There are days when I sing for the masses
When my songs get repeated back to me by thousands
And there are days when I know
That the only one who hears me is You
So what do I do – when

(chorus)

here’s my life you write the words

Inappropriate Singing

Yesterday I talked about us singing songs in church without really thinking about or believing the words we sing (Don’t Just Sing). Today I want to think about other non christian music we sing along to, in our car, in our house, in clubs or other places we find ourselves. In particular, I want us to think the words and the message relayed by all the songs we sing-along with.

So you’re listening to some music, you like the tune and the rhythm of the music, so you start singing along with the words. Do you ever stop to think what the words you’re singing are actually saying? Do you even know whether the song is one appropriate for a Christian to be associated with?

My husband is a music fanatic, he buys CDs, downloads almost on a daily basis, so quite frequently he gives me some “new” stuff to listen to in my car. A few weeks ago, he did just this. After listening to a few tracks I found myself getting quite into the music, the singer had a pretty good voice, the melody/tune quite listenable and the accompaniment pretty good. What I hadn’t paid quite as much attention to was the words…that is until a number of days later, having now memorised the music/melody, I was now paying more attention to the words as I started to “sing-along” in the car. To my horror I found the words of one song was particularly offensive to me, as it talked about there being no God and that the bible was full of untruths.

What did I do? I have now put this music on my “banned” list, as I do not want to be associated with the words contained in the song – After all what would others think of me if they were in my car and that music came on, as it goes against all I try to portray by the way I live.

I’d urge you now to look through your playlists and get rid of any music that is inappropriate for a Christian to listen to – I have!

Don’t Just Sing

Picture the scene…

You’re sitting in church.
The leader says your going to “join together and sing” song number x.
The introduction is played.
You stand.
You sing the word of the song.
The song finishes you sit down.
The service continues.
You maybe sing two or three more songs, and go through the same steps as those above each time.

Now think back to a time you were in the above situation…when you were singing those songs, how much attention were you actually paying to the words you were singing?

If I’m honest, I am very guilty of not thinking about what I’m actually singing! I’d say I’m particularly prone to doing this when we sing songs I know well so don’t need to keep looking at the words, or checking the next line of the song.

Is this what God wants? I doubt it! We shouldn’t sing songs praising God, or asking for God’s help etc without actually meaning and believing what we are singing. Maybe if we are not feeling lie we can praise God, or believe he can help us we shouldn’t insult God by singing those words as if we believe them.

Sing to God, but do it from your heart believing what you’re singing. Don’t sing just because you feel you should, put your heart and soul into it!

Lord, keep us from just singing, and move us into action!

God of Justice by Tim Hughes

God of Justice, Saviour to all
Came to rescue the weak and the poor
Chose to serve and not be served

Jesus, You have called us
Freely we’ve received
Now freely we will give

We must go live to feed the hungry
Stand beside the broken
We must go
Stepping forward keep us from just singing
Move us into action

We must go

To act justly everyday
Loving mercy in every way
Walking humbly before You God

You have shown us, what You require
Freely we’ve received
Now freely we will give

Fill us up and send us out
Fill us up and send us out
Fill us up and send us out Lord

 Words To Live By

It’s not how much you accomplish in life
that really counts,
but how much you give to others.

It’s not how high you build your dreams
that makes a difference,
but how high your faith can climb.

It’s not how many goals you reach,
but how many lives you touch.

It’s not who you know that matters,
but who you are inside.

 Believe in the impossible,
hold tight to the incredible,
and live each day to its fullest potential.
You can make a difference
in your world.

 ~ Rebecca Barlow Jordan ~

Have you made a difference in anyone’s life today? In the last week? In the last month? This year?

Just because you don’t know of anything you’ve done that has made a difference to someone, doesn’t mean you haven’t. It’s often the small, seemingly insignificant things we do for others that ultimately makes a huge difference or a huge impact in someone’s life.

If we just continue to live our lives believing in God, He will help us do what’s right and ultimately make a difference in someone’s life.

Everything Impossible by MercyMe

I was taught to be practical in everything I do
Holding on to what is tangible, and then came You
That’s when I found myself so far away, from everything I knew
I took a leap of faith

Even though You’re difficult for me to explain
I know I’ll never be the same

You’re everything I cannot see
You’re everything I cannot say
I know it all seems so illogical
But that’s okay
You’re the love You give to me
You’re the love I give away
You are everything impossible

 And that’s okay

 That’s okay!

All the things that make no sense to me, draw me to You
Like finding freedom by surrendering, can it be true
With everything I can and cannot know
This mystery is bringing life to me

And all this love I have for You I can’t contain
I know I’ll never be the same

  You’re everything I cannot see
You’re everything I cannot say
I know it all seems so illogical
But that’s okay
You’re the love You give to me
You’re the love I give away
You are everything impossible
And that’s okay

  That’s okay

  What’s so hard to understand
What I cannot comprehend
Is that You love me the way I am

  You’re everything I cannot see
You’re everything I cannot say
I know it all seems so illogical
But that’s okay
You’re the love You give to me
You’re the love I give away
You are everything impossible
And that’s okay

  You’re everything I cannot see
You’re everything I cannot say
I know it all seems so illogical
But that’s okay
You’re the love You give to me
You’re the love I give away
You are everything impossible
And that’s okay

And that’s okay

Great Kindness

Kind words cost nothing and can achieve much, even difficult people respond to kindness.

Be kind – Show some love to the unloveable.

Hands Of Kindness

Oh your hands of kindness are here for me
And I have heard they are silken and can carry me

How I love you
All I am is you
King of love I bow

Oh your hands of mercy were scarred for me
And your body was broken so that I go free

Oh your love that burns me, deeper than the sea
And the treasure I find here, the saviour’s love for me

Rain Down

Deuteronomy 32:2 (NIV)
Let my teaching fall like rain and my words descend like dew, like showers on new grass, like abundant rain on tender plants.

Let God’s word rain down on you today. Let Him enter into your life and take control. He is willing and ready to do so today.

Delirious? – Rain Down

Looks like tonight, the sky is heavy
Feels like the winds are gonna change
Beneath my feet, the earth is ready
I know its time for heaven’s rain, it’s gonna rain

Cos it’s living water we desire
To flood our hearts with holy fire

Rain down all around the world we’re singing
Rain down can you hear the earth is singing
Rain down my heart is dry but still I’m singing
Rain down rain it down on me.

Back to the start, my heart is heavy
Feels like it’s time, to dream again
I see the clouds, and yes I’m ready
To dance upon this barren land
Hope in my hands

Do not shut, Do not shut, Do not shut the heavens
But open up, open up, open up our hearts

Give me strength to cross the water
Keep my heart upon Your altar
Give me strength to cross this water
Keep my feet don’t let me falter

Be Strong

Be Strong by Delta Goodrem is a favourite song of mine. It’s not a described as a Christian song, however if you listen to the words you’ll find that it could be God that’s spoken the words…

Are you swimming up stream
in oceans of blue
Do you feel like your sinking?
Are you sick of the rain after all you’ve been through?
Well I know what you’re thinking
When you can’t take it
You can make it
Sometime soon I know you’ll see

’cause when you’re in your darkest hour
And all of the light just fades away
and When you’re like a single flower whose colours have turned to shades of gray
Well hang on and be strong

We’re taking each step one day at a time
You can’t loose your spirit
Let live and let live forget and forgive
It’s all how you see it
And just remember keep it together
Don’t you know you’re never alone

’cause when you’re in your darkest hour
And all of the light just fades away
When you’re like a single flower whose colours have turned to shades of gray
Well hang on (whoa) and be strong

No you’re not defeated
And soon you’ll be smiling once again
Then you won’t have to feel it
Let it go with the wind
Time passes us by
And know that you’re allowed to cry

’cause when you’re in your darkest hour
And all of the light just fades away
When you’re like a single flower whose colours have turned to shades of gray
Well hang on (whoa) and be strong
(hang on hang on) Be strong
Hold on and be strong

Psalm 145:18
The LORD is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.

Hold onto your faith, and stay strong, as God is with you at all times.

Call on Jesus, He will be near you, so stay strong.

Live The Word

Matthew 23:1-3 – The Message
Now Jesus turned to address his disciples, along with the crowd that had gathered with them. “The religion scholars and Pharisees are competent teachers in God’s Law. You won’t go wrong in following their teachings on Moses. But be careful about following them. They talk a good line, but they don’t live it. They don’t take it into their hearts and live it out in their behavior. It’s all spit-and-polish veneer.

I don’t know about you, but those I meet who profess to be Christians I expect them to live/act as a Christian should. In the above passage from St. Matthew’s gospel Jesus seems to say that some people talk a good talk, but they haven’t really got those feelings/beliefs in their hearts. i.e. They know all the right words, but their actions do not mirror what they say.

If we profess to be a Christian but our actions do not reflect this, how can we ever expect others to follow Christ because of us – we are far more likely to convince people to turn away from God entirely!

Don’t become someone who “talks the talk but doesn’t live The Word”. Whenever you tell folk you’re a Christian, you’ll they immediately (often subconsciously)start examining your words and actions in microscopic detail, just to try and find fault. So make sure your words and actions are as a Christians should be, that way it’ll be much easier for others to see Christ living in your life – Making them far more likely to want to find out more about Christ because of your good example.

Talk the talk and live The Word!

Words

In the office today I was asked to review a document that had been written by someone else. I did so and then gave feedback on my findings. Only to discover that the meaning I had taken from some of the statements was completely different from the intended meaning!

It’s so easy to say things either verbally or in writing, thinking you have stated your points well and without ambiguity, but then find out the listener/reader has taken a completely different meaning from your words!

Sadly this is how so many relationships/friendship are broken. 😦

We as Christians must be particularly careful about what we say, as we must at all times speak and act as God wants to. i.e. we must try not to say or do things that upset others unintentionally or intentionally.

Psalms 19:14

May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.

Do you always speak/act as God desires you to?

I know I am guilty at times of not speaking/acting as I know God wants me to. We must ask God to forgive us when to do or say something to displease Him and ask Him to be at the centre of everything we do and say, this way we can be sure we will always act/speak in a way that reflects God’s love for each one of us.
