The Weight of Prayer

This a beautiful and very thought provoking story. I how it inspires you to put your full trust and faith in God:

Louise Redden, a poorly dressed lady with a look of defeat on her face, walked into a grocery store. She approached the owner of the store in a most humble manner and asked if he would let her charge a few groceries. She softly explained that her husband was very ill and unable to work, they had seven children and they needed food.

John Longhouse, the grocer, scoffed at her and requested that she leave His store. Visualizing the family needs, she said: ‘Please, sir! I will bring you the money just as soon as I can.”

John told her he could not give her credit, as she did not have a charge account at his store.

Standing beside the counter was a customer who overheard the conversation between the two. The customer walked forward and told the groceryman that he would stand good for whatever she needed for her family.

The groceryman said in a very reluctant voice, “Do you have a grocery list?” Louise replied “Yes sir” “O.K.” he said, “put your grocery list on the scales and whatever your grocery list weighs, I will give you that amount in groceries.”

Louise, hesitated a moment with a bowed head, then she reached into her purse and took out a piece of paper and scribbled something on it. She then laid the piece of paper on the scale carefully with her head still bowed.

The eyes of the groceryman and the customer showed amazement when the scales went down and stayed down. The groceryman staring at the scales, turned slowly to the customer and said begrudgingly, “I can’t believe it.”

The customer smiled and the groceryman started putting the groceries on the other side of the scales. The scale did not balance so he continued to put more and more groceries on them until the scales would hold no more. The groceryman stood there in utter disgust.

Finally, he grabbed the piece of paper from the scales and looked at it with greater amazement. It was not a grocery list, it was a prayer which said: “Dear Lord, you know my needs and I am leaving this in your hands.”

The groceryman gave her the groceries that he had gathered and placed on the scales and stood in stunned silence. Louise thanked him and left the store. The customer handed a fifty-dollar bill to John as he said, “It was worth every penny of it.”

It was sometime later that John Longhouse discovered the scales were broken; therefore, only God knows how much a prayer weighs.

God works in mysterious way. Hallelujah!

Those who are parents or work with children, have an awesome responsibility to teach the children all they need to have a fantastic future. Doesn’t this all fit in with what I’ve been talking about the last few days…influence! We must ensure we are a positive influence on our children, and make sure we teach them right from wrong, good from evil.

God can and will teach us how and what to teach our children. Through God’s help not only can we be sure we are teaching well in life’s ways but also in God’s ways.

Raising Children For The Lord by M.S.Lowndes

It’s such an awesome privilege
And a big responsibility
God has given to us as parents
This wonderful opportunity
To raise our precious children
And instil into their lives
The wonder and amazement
of the love of Jesus Christ
So they will learn to trust in Him
And worship and to pray
To love others with the love of God
And to honour and obey
As parents we’ve been entrusted
To raise them in God’s love
To be there to encourage them
When they feel like giving up
And to be there just to listen
When life deals some painful blows
And comfort them when they feel afraid
And when tears begin to flow
To share with them those joyful times
The precious moments in their lives
When doors begin to open up
And opportunities arise
Through everything they face in life
Let’s be there cheering them on
For we only have one chance at this
For childhood soon is gone
So let’s rely on Father God
To raise them to become
Men or Women who trust in Him
And in His precious Son.

A beautiful song, one of my favourites by Kathryn Scott entitled Child of God fits in perfectly with my thoughts today:

This is a message every adult should read because children are watching you and doing as you do, not as you say.

Who does so much for others, but thinks that no-one ever sees? Each of us – parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, teacher, friend  – influences the life of a child.

How will you touch the life of someone today?

Just by reading this you will probably at least think about the influence you have on others, and by passing on the link to this post today, you get someone else thinking about if they influence others.

  • When you thought I wasn’t looking, I saw you hang my first painting on the refrigerator, and I immediately wanted to paint another one.
  • When you thought I wasn’t looking, I saw you feed a stray cat, and I learned that it was good to be kind to animals.
  • When you thought I wasn’t looking, I saw you make my favorite cake for me, and I learned that the little things can be the special things in life.
  • When you thought I wasn’t looking, I heard you say a prayer, and I knew that there is a God I could always talk to, and I learned to trust in Him.
  • When you thought I wasn’t looking, I saw you make a meal and take it to a friend who was sick, and I learned that we all have to help take care of each other.
  • When you thought I wasn’t looking, I saw you give of your time and money to help people who had nothing, and I learned that those who have something should give to those who don’t.
  • When you thought I wasn’t looking, I saw you take care of our house and everyone in it, and I learned we have to take care of what we are given.
  • When you thought I wasn’t looking, I saw how you handled your responsibilities, even when you didn’t feel good, and I learned that I would have to be responsible when I grow up.
  • When you thought I wasn’t looking, I saw tears come from your eyes, and I learned that sometimes things hurt, but it’s all right to cry.
  • When you thought I wasn’t looking, I saw that you cared, and I wanted to be everything that I could be.
  • When you thought I wasn’t looking, I learned most of life’s lessons that I need to know to be a good and productive person when I grow up.
  • When you thought I wasn’t looking, I looked at you and wanted to say,’Thanks for all the things I saw when you thought I wasn’t looking.’

Little eyes see a lot.

Live simply.

Love generously.

Care deeply.

Speak kindly.

Leave the rest to God.

In the UK it is Mother’s Day today, so I’d like to wish all mothers everywhere a very happy Mother’s Day!

Although many families all over the UK will be celebrating with their mothers, there are those who will be finding today very difficult and possibly a very sad occasion too. To me there are three groups of people who need our special prayers today

  • Whose Mum is no longer with them, especially those who have been recently bereaved
  • Who have lost touch with their mother
  • Whose mother is unwell and/or in hospital
  • Who have been bereaved of a child
  • Who have lost touch with a child
  • Who have a child who is unwell and/or in hospital
  • Whose have a missing child, or a child that has been kidnapped
Other Females
  • Who would love to be a mother, but are unable to have children
  • Who would love to a mother, but for health reasons have been advised not to have children
  • Who have suffered a miscarriage
My Story

You’ll have seen from my profile that we do not have any children, so I find today quite difficult. Although I must admit, I’ve found previous years even more difficult when I’ve attend my church on Mother’s Day,  as the focus is all about family and mothers. My church is Bellshill Salvation Army and as well as my difficulty coping with Mother’s Day as we have no children, it’s also difficult for me as I have no family members there either.

My Request

Many people will have been struggling in the build up to Mother’s Day, including those in the situations mentioned above. So pease take some time out from your busy day to pray for them today, particularly anyone you know in these circumstances. I truly believe that bringing them before God in prayer today, will make a difference.

How much do you think God loves you?
Do you even know that God loves you?

Think about the person or people in your life you love you most…
God loves you more than that!
Think about the person or people in your life you love you most and multiply a million times…
God loves you more than that!

God loves me more than I could every comprehend.
God loves you more than I’m sure you could ever comprehend.

Do not ever underestimate how much God loves you and how much God can do for you. God loves you as a father loves his child. We each are God’s children, so believe in God, believe in His love.
