Don’t Just Sing

Picture the scene…

You’re sitting in church.
The leader says your going to “join together and sing” song number x.
The introduction is played.
You stand.
You sing the word of the song.
The song finishes you sit down.
The service continues.
You maybe sing two or three more songs, and go through the same steps as those above each time.

Now think back to a time you were in the above situation…when you were singing those songs, how much attention were you actually paying to the words you were singing?

If I’m honest, I am very guilty of not thinking about what I’m actually singing! I’d say I’m particularly prone to doing this when we sing songs I know well so don’t need to keep looking at the words, or checking the next line of the song.

Is this what God wants? I doubt it! We shouldn’t sing songs praising God, or asking for God’s help etc without actually meaning and believing what we are singing. Maybe if we are not feeling lie we can praise God, or believe he can help us we shouldn’t insult God by singing those words as if we believe them.

Sing to God, but do it from your heart believing what you’re singing. Don’t sing just because you feel you should, put your heart and soul into it!

Lord, keep us from just singing, and move us into action!

God of Justice by Tim Hughes

God of Justice, Saviour to all
Came to rescue the weak and the poor
Chose to serve and not be served

Jesus, You have called us
Freely we’ve received
Now freely we will give

We must go live to feed the hungry
Stand beside the broken
We must go
Stepping forward keep us from just singing
Move us into action

We must go

To act justly everyday
Loving mercy in every way
Walking humbly before You God

You have shown us, what You require
Freely we’ve received
Now freely we will give

Fill us up and send us out
Fill us up and send us out
Fill us up and send us out Lord
