Sometimes all we can think about is everything that’s sitting on our shoulders.
- The to‑do lists that didn’t get finished.
- The decisions waiting for us tomorrow.
- The conversations we’re not sure how to have.
- The responsibilities that seem to multiply when we’re not looking.
It’s amazing how quickly thinking about “a few things that we must remember to do” suddenly turns into “all we can think about”, and then turns into “I feel overwhelmed.”
We don’t feel overwhelmed because we’re weak. We do so because:
- We’re human!
- We care.
- We want to do things well.
- We want to make the right choices.
- We want to be faithful with what’s in front of us.
But sometimes the weight of it all presses in, and we find ourselves lying awake at night, with everything going round and round in our head. We wonder how we’re going to manage to ‘get through’ the coming days.
Feeling overwhelmed often comes from three places:
- Too much to do and not enough time or clarity
- Too many decisions and the fear of making the wrong decision
- Too many expectations from others, from ourselves, from life
It’s a lot, and pretending it’s not doesn’t help.
But here’s the quiet truth – We were never meant to carry all of this alone.
In Psalms we read about being overwhelmed – It’s not loud or dramatic, it’s gentle, like someone placing a steadying hand on your shoulder.
From the ends of the earth I call to you,
Psalm 61:2 (NIV)
I call as my heart grows faint;
lead me to the rock that is higher than I.
What a relief those words are, as they don’t say “pull yourself together”, or “figure it out” or “try harder.”
Instead we’re told that when our heart feels faint, we should call out, and God will lead us to higher ground.
- A place of perspective.
- A place of strength.
- A place where the noise quiets and the weight lifts, even if just a little.
If tonight feels heavy, you’re not failing.
You’re not falling behind.
You’re not alone.
You’re simply standing at the edge of your own limits, and that’s exactly where God meets you.
He doesn’t ask you to have everything sorted.
He doesn’t demand instant clarity.
He doesn’t expect you to carry every day in your hands.
He just invites you to breathe…to call out…to let Him lead you to the rock that is higher than you.
And from there, tomorrow looks a little less intimidating.
Here’s some words of reassurance.
