Music has always been a huge part of life, both general music as well as Christian music. I’ve often found that when I’m struggling I find myself listening to music that lifts my spirit, or when I need reminded of God’s love for me, I find myself listening to songs of praise and worship – Why? I believe because God has erected me to that music.
Music is such a huge inspiration to me in my Christian life, that I often thank God for those who have been inspired by Him to write the music (and the words). I read the following prayer on a friends Facebook status a few days ago (You know who you are, I hope you don’t mind me using it):
We are moved by music and word , given through God , we all have different tastes , but we give thanks to those who inspire us through ,in word music and song … however it touches or moves us , in whatever form it takes we give you the thanks and praise …. for the gift you give these people who sing , speak , and write your word what an important ministry , IN YOUR NAME WE PRAY … AMEN .

The Distinct Dot 
Sort of diminishes the value of a person’s talent by saying “I think God for those who have been inspired by him”, doesn’t it? Why not thank the person him/herself for making good music?
Sort of goes with the whole “Thank God for everything good but never mention the bad-argument”, I guess.

The person who writes the music gets their thanks from God in the knowledge that their words/music will inspire others to follow Christ and learn more about Him – That’s why we thank God for the music, not the person directly.
As for your other point about the bad stuff…God is not responsible for the bad things that people do, people choose to disobey God’s will and His commandments. For the bad things that hope to good people, they happen for a reason, and help to make us strong and make us into the people we are today – without facing and coping with situations how can we ever relate to non Christians we if haven’t experienced life in the same way they have?!
