British or Scottish?

I had already planned on writing a blog post about my nationality, but was encouraged to do so even more after watching an Outnumbered sketch with Andy Murray on Comic Relief last night on BBC.

Why?

Initially in the sketch Jake tells Karen that Andy Murray is the British top tennis player, but then later asks Andy to shout, ” ‘Focus’, nice and Scottish” – and this obviously confuses Karen…

Karen to Andy: “Hang on, are you British or Scottish?”

Andy: “Depends whether I win or not”

Oooooo! My thoughts exactly, though I must admit to being slightly surprised that the BBC were admitting Andy’s nationality varies depending on whether he is doing well or not! I.e winning = British and losing = Scottish!

As a true Scot, I must admit to finding it incredibly annoying when Scottish people are called British or, even worse…English!

We are Scottish, and the majority of us are proud to be Scottish! I also suspect the majority of Scottish folk would when asked their nationality, would say Scottish rather than British…surely that tells you something!

A bit of a controversial discussion today, but hey, I don’t like being too predictable or indeed too “safe” in what I have to say…but then I’m Scottish!

  1. Are you saying you can’t be both Scottish and British? There’s no need to create new artificial divisions between people, we have plenty already!

    1. No I am not! I’m not the one creating divisions, the media do it! I’m simply asking what the response of most Scots would be if they were asked whether they are Scottish or British, or if indeed they were asked what nationality they are.
I’m making a statement of fact not one of division!

    2. P.S. Why have you posted 2 separate comments on this post under different names (i.e. James and Sandy)?

    1. You are missing the whole point of my blog post!

My point is that much of the media and many English people are quite happy to consider Sottish people to be British when they are doing something to be proud of or pleased with. However it’s adifferent matter when things aren’t goinf well, that’s when they are happy to call us Scottish rather than British!
