RSVP is a term I’ve always found a little confusing as it’s usual used in conjunction with invitations to a social event. It is the initials of the French phrase ‘Repondez s’il vous plait‘ which means ‘Please respond’ – in other words asking you to confirm your attendance at the event you’ve been invited to.

What always got me about RSVPs is that if someone invites you to an event, isn’t it common courtesy to let the person who invited you know whether you can make the event or not, so why do we need to write RSVP on invitations?

Also why not just write, ‘Please respond’ or ‘Please reply’ instead of going for the initials of a French phrase?
