Who’s your safety blanket?

Earlier today on Bellshill Salvation Army Band’s Facebook page I shared some devotions. I’d like to share those devotions with you tonight.

I’m sure we’ve all heard of children who carry around a blanket with them, a ‘safety blanket’, to protect them from danger and ‘hold’ them while they try to sleep.

I’m sure even as adults, we all hold onto things we believe give us reassurance, or turn to people who we feel give us the security or safety we seek.

We know the only person we can always rely on 100% of the time, and provide that reassurance and safety we seek, is God. So why do we still try and ‘go it alone’, and only turn to God when we’re in trouble?

In Isaiah 41:13, God calls us to find our rest in Him:

For I am the Lord, your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, ‘Do not fear; I will help you.’

Isaiah 41:13

Why don’t we trust God, that he is more than enough for us, all the time? Maybe we need to put away our ‘security blankets’ and instead lift our eyes to God and remind ourselves that He alone can provide all we need.

Find rest, O my soul, in God alone;
my hope comes from him.
He alone is my rock and my salvation;
he is my fortress, I will not be shaken.
My salvation and my honour depend on God;
he is my mighty rock, my refuge.
Trust in him at all times, O people;
pour out your hearts to him,
for God is our refuge.

Psalm 62:5-8

Find reassurance in the knowledge that God is More Than Just Enough for each of us, in every situation.

Be still and know that he is God
Even on a dark night like tonight
Do you think he forgot
And do you think he doesn’t care
Well he does
And he’s more than just enough

I know you’re going through this alone
You Knock so hard on that door
but still there’s no one home
But he will answer you
And answer you with love
And that’s why
He’s more than just enough

You are more than just enough
You are more than just enough
Even when times get rough
You’re more than just enough

Hard tears and a heavy heart
Everything is slipping away
You’re falling apart
But he gazes down at you
Beaming with love
Saying “child, You’re more than just enough”

You are more than just enough
You are more than just enough
Even when times get tough
You’re more than just enough

There are times I feel the life
Slipping through my hands
And my thoughts provoke my tears
As I try to understand
That your hands sustain me
You love remains the only thing worth living for
That’s why you’re more

You’re more than just enough
You are more than just enough
You are more than just enough
Even when times get rough
You’re more than just
You are more than just
You are more than just enough
You are more than just enough
Please be more than just enough
