If ever I loved thee

Earlier today on Bellshill Salvation Army Band’s Facebook page I shared some devotions. I’d like to share those devotions with you tonight.

In last Wednesday’s devotions I asked what your answer would be if God were to ask you, “How much do you love me?”. Today we remember that Jesus actually told us in Matthew’s gospel just how much we should love God.

Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment.”

Matthew 22:37-38 (NIV)
My Jesus, I love thee, I know thou art mine,
For thee all the pleasures of sin I resign;
My gracious Redeemer, my Saviour art thou,
If ever I loved thee, my Jesus, 'tis now.

I love thee because thou hast first loved me,
And purchased my pardon on Calvary's tree;
I love thee for wearing the thorns on thy brow,
If ever I loved thee, my Jesus, 'tis now.

I will love thee in life, I will love thee in death,
And praise thee as long as thou lendest me breath;
And say, when the death-dew lies cold on my brow:
If ever I loved thee, my Jesus, 'tis now.

In mansions of Glory and endless delight,
I'll ever adore thee and dwell in thy sight;
I'll sing with the glittering crown on my brow:
If ever I loved thee, my Jesus, 'tis now.

Did you notice how every verse finishes with the same words? These recurring words reinforce our faith in God, and our claim that “Lord, you know that we love you”.

I pray that as we reaffirm our faith in God, we can honestly claim, “if ever I loved thee, my Jesus ’tis now”.
