Scrum is like…

For many years at work, we have been developing IT solutions using the waterfall methodology of project management – It emphasizes a linear progression from beginning to end of a project.

However in the last couple of years or so, we have started our journey into developing our IT solutions using the agile methodology of project management – The Agile methodology requires the project to be broken down into several smaller phases (known as sprints). It requires constant collaboration with stakeholders as well as continuous improvement throughout each stage. Once the work begins, teams cycle through a process of planning, executing, and evaluating.

While doing some further reading on agile methodologies I found the following quote about the Scrum agile framework.

Scrum is like your mother-in-law; it points out all your faults.

Ken Schwaber

At first when I read this, I laughed, and then I re-read the quote, and laughed some more, but then it hit me, do we really want to know about all our faults, to air them openly, and discuss their impact and root cause – The answer to that is yes we do, as isn’t what I’ve just described the continuous improvement process that is part of Scrum!

I wonder how many of my team would find it funny if I read the above quote to them!
