My week in review – week #38 2023

Busy week again at work, particularly with a number of my team on leave, and having two Modern Apprentices joining in my on Tuesday.

Spent most of this week in meetings or organising/arranging various people to show/buddy with our MAs to show them some of the work we do. The plan for their first couple of weeks is each day they spend approximately half a day doing some reading to learn about our organisation and policies, and the technology and methodologies we use to develop software. The other half of each day will be spent getting some ‘intros to…’ from various of my team, so they get a flavour for a number of the tools and processes we use to do our jobs. We’re just trying to give them a flavour of many of the things we, as a team do, before we then start to go into some of these in more detail in the coming weeks.

Last Friday BT were meant to upgrade us to full fibre broadband, but it never happened (more details can be found in last week’s My week in review – week #37 2023). We were provisionally book in for 4th October but were told someone would call us on Monday to give us a priority booking for sooner than that as the work wasn’t carried out when scheduled.

No-one from BT phoned us on Monday, so we contacted them and were assured we had been given a priority booking for Friday (i.e. yesterday) morning – this is despite us asked for it not to be for yesterday and also asking for an afternoon appointment! We checked our order booking right up to yesterday and the scheduled date was still showing at 4 October, so we thought it unlikely anyone would turn up to do the work yesterday morning.

We were proved right, as yesterday morning came and went, and no BT engineer! However mid afternoon an door bell went and it was a BT engineer. He apologised for coming this afternoon, but indicated the person who had been supposed to come, had been tied up at another job, so he’d been sent to do the work. The guy was polite and helpful, and explained all he was doing, and despite originally being tasked with just doing the cabling part of the job, he did all the work so we didn’t have to wait indefinitely for the other engineer to get to us. He had us up and running on full fibre much quicker than we had imagined. Hopefully no more pixelated TV if we’re downloading/uploading anything at the same time now!

Another busy week ahead, as it’s end of sprint/start of new sprint again, and still a number of the team on leave, so could be some long working days ahead again.
