Earlier today on Bellshill Salvation Army Band’s Facebook page I shared some devotions. I’d like to share those devotions with you tonight.
When was the last time when you left your house, and just stopped for a minute at your front door, and looked up at the sky?
Look up into the sky and be amazed by the the sky, the clouds, the sun and moon and, if you’re looking at night, the stars.
Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!
You have set your glory in the heavens.
When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?
You have made them a little lower than the angels and crowned them with glory and honour.
Psalm 8 (NIV) selected verses
Isn’t it amazing how diverse a universe God has created for us to live in? A world full of thousands of different creatures, and people from many cultures and histories. But in amongst all that God took the time to create you and me in such detail that he knows everything about us. He continues to remember each of us, and yearn for us all to acknowledge him as God.
Look up to the sky tonight and remember all the wonderful and amazing detail God has put into creating this world we live in.
What an amazing God we serve!
Looking in the sky, Whoever could deny Your glory? Gazing into space, How small the human race appears. Seeing You in all Your majesty, I wonder how it could be That You delight in me. Lord, You are an amazing God. Lord, You are an amazing God. Lord, You are an amazing God, And I love You, I love You. Lord of everything, No other god or king is like You. Powerful and strong, Yet tender is Your song to me. Knowing the extent of all my sin, However could You be pleased To pour Your love on me? You light up the heavens with just one word, You measure the mountains in Your hand; Yet You treasure the broken and make them whole, You crown us with Your love.
Last Sunday in our worship we celebrated harvest, so in my own devotions I’ve been thinking a little bit more about about harvest.
Jesus went through many towns and villages. He taught in their synagogues. He preached the good news of the kingdom of God. He healed every disease and sickness. Whenever crowds came to Him, He had compassion for them because they were so deeply distraught, malaised, and heart-broken. They seemed to Him like lost sheep without a shepherd. Jesus understood what an awesome task was before Him, so He said to His disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest to send more workers into His harvest field.”
Matthew 9:35-38 (The Voice)
In the harvest season we often remember God’s provision for us and His blessings for others. However those things do not only happen at harvest time, but instead happen all year round on a daily basis.
Each day that we go to work and earn a wage, we experience God’s harvest. Each time we receive love from our family and friends, we experience God’s harvest. Each time we experience the closeness of God in a way that fills us spiritually, we experience God’s harvest. Any time we experience God’s harvest, we are reminded of God’s amazing love for each one of us.
When we recognise the Lord of the harvest for who he is in our lives, we also acknowledge that harvest is something God provides for us to meet our needs. Harvest is also something God wants us to use to bless others. All those wonderful things in our lives that we’ll give thanks for next month? Those things exist, in large part, to be a blessing to the world around us, all because of we are loved by an amazing God!
