Worrier

Earlier today on Bellshill Salvation Army Band’s Facebook page I shared some devotions. I’d like to share those devotions with you tonight.

It can be difficult sometimes to move on when situations or circumstances in life cause you great concern. As humans we are by nature worriers, and some tend to worry more than others.

Have you noticed that the more we worry about something, the more worried we get? And have you noticed that when we worry about something, it often doesn’t turn out to be as bad as we as we’d built it up to be?

What do we actually achieve by worrying, as worrying about something does not change how a situation or circumstance will actually turn out? Is it possible we achieve nothing by worrying?

Despite this, I know I am still a worrier. In fact, in the last few days I’ve found myself waking during the night and then finding myself thinking about some situations that I’m worried or anxious about. Did I achieve anything by worrying about them? I did not! In fact all I did was get myself more worked up and worried about the situations, and in turn stopped myself from getting some much needed sleep!

I recently came across a small piece of paper on which the following words were printed.

Sometimes we just have to let things go.
Breath. Relax and trust God.
Worrying won't fix it, but God will.

We can’t fix or resolve anything by worrying. But we can lift the weight of our worries from us, by taking all our worries and concerns to God.

Maybe we all need to remind us of Jesus words in Matthew 11:28.

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

Matthew 11:28 (NIV)

Jesus is our friend, who hears our prayers and offers us comfort. This beautiful promise can be found in the words of the chorus of the song ‘All Your Anxiety’.

Is there a heart o'erbound by sorrow?
Is there a life weighed down by care?
Come to the cross, each burden bearing,
All your anxiety, leave it there.

Chorus
All your anxiety, all your care,
Bring to the mercy seat, leave it there,
Never a burden He cannot bear,
Never a friend like Jesus.

No other friend so keen to help you;
No other friend so quick to hear;
No other place to leave your burden;
No other one to hear your prayer.

Come, then, at once; delay no longer;
Heed His entreaty, kind and sweet;
You need not fear a disappointment;
You shall find peace at the mercy seat.
