Earlier today on Bellshill Salvation Army Band’s Facebook page I shared some devotions. I’d like to share those devotions with you tonight.
Have you ever stood at your front door, closed your eyes, opened the door, and then tried to navigate your way from there to another room in your house without opening your eyes again?
No matter how long you have lived in your home, I suspect most of us would still struggle to find our way, in a reasonable time, from the front door to other locations in our house. Isn’t that a bit like our lives at times, when we think we can get by on our own, without God – we stumble about, trip and fall and lose our way.
While thinking about how I sometimes try to find my own way through life, as I think I know better than God, what is best for me, I was reminded of this verse in Isaiah.
For I am the Lord your God
Isaiah 41:13 (NIV)
who takes hold of your right hand
and says to you, Do not fear;
I will help you.
Each one of us needs God to be our guide through life. We are reminded in the hymn “Be Thou My Vision” of who God is, and what He provides for each of us.
Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart!
Naught be all else to me, save that thou art;
Thou my best thought in the day and the night,
Waking or sleeping, thy presence my light.
Be thou my wisdom, be thou my true word;
I ever with thee and thou with me, Lord;
Thou my great Father and I thy true son;
Thou in me dwelling and I with thee one.
3 Be thou my breastplate, my sword for the fight;
Be thou my armour and be thou my might;
Be my soul's shelter and thou my high tower;
Raise thou me heavenward, O power of my power!
Riches I heed not, nor man's empty praise;
Thou my inheritance now and always;
Thou and thou only the first in my heart;
High King of Heaven, my treasure thou art!
High King of Heaven, thou Heaven?s bright Sun,
Grant me its joys after victory is won!
Christ of my own heart, whatever befall,
Still be my vision, O Ruler of all!
God is with each one of us. He protects us and gives us strength. He brings wisdom. He endows us with treasure in heaven. He is our destination, both now and for eternity. And He is our greatest hope. So let Him be your guide through life.
Christ of my own heart, whatever befall, [Lord] Still be my vision, O Ruler of all!
