I’m not a great lover of the cold, dark winter months, except on days when it’s wet, snowy and cold, and I know I don’t need to leave the house! I much prefer spring, when we start to see the first shoots of plants/flowers as they start to awake from their winter hibernation.
We are promised before winter takes hold, that spring will return. That same promise is often spoken between loved ones when one is leaving to maybe go on holiday, to work in another area, or to serve in the armed forces. During such partings there will often be a promise of returning soon, safe and sound, so that the person who is leaving can be assured that all will be will with them, and with those they leave behind.
The reassurance and anticipation of a future reunion are sometimes all that’s needed to calm and assure everyone, just as it did for the disciples when Jesus left them – He told them that their hearts should not be troubled, and that they should wait, as he would come back to them. Just as he promised to come back for you and me.
Jesus’ resurrection must have had a profound effect on the disciples’ ability to believe. Following Jesus ascension, they recalled that Jesus not only promised his resurrection, but delivered on that promise. The peace that settled on the disciples was evident as they obeyed Jesus’ command to wait for the Holy Spirit, and then to declare the gospel.
Do you believe Jesus’ promise that he will come back for you? Just as we are promised that after the harshness of every winter, spring will return, I encourage you to believe that Christ will return for each of us.
