Earlier today on Bellshill Salvation Army Band’s Facebook page I shared some devotions. I’d like to share those devotions with you tonight.
How many times in the last week have you heard, or been involved in a conversation about identity? Maybe those conversations have been about identity thieves, people pretending to be someone or something they are not, or maybe it’s been conversations about who we are as individuals.
For many people if you were to ask them who they are as individuals, they would tell you about their cultural or ethnic upbringing, their social status, their religion or religious status. Or would they? I recently read the results of a survey on an entertainment news website – it stated that almost half of those who completed the survey would change or adjust their answers to, “Who are you?”, based on who asked them the question, and the people they were with at the time.
That surprised me, as I expected far more people to stand-up for their beliefs and who they are. It got me thinking about whether I amend or adjust my identity when asked the question, “Who am I?” depending on who asks me the question. I was reminded of this verse of scripture.
On that day you will realise that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you.
John 14:20 (NIV)
If we have claimed Christ as our Saviour, the clearer the answer to “Who are you?”, should be. It should also be clear to those around us too, as they will see that we live our lives differently to others, because our words and actions reflect Christ.
We therefore need wonder who we are, as the ‘you’ God made you to be is in his image, and the more you get to know Him, the clearer your identity in Him will be to you, and to everyone around you.
We challenge you to consider today,”Who are you?”
Tonight we will hold our final band practice of this session before we stop for our summer break. This will therefore be the last of our Wednesday devotions for a few weeks. They will restart in August when our band practices restart.
We thank you for your continued support of the band, and hope you have a safe and blessed summer break. We look forward to sharing more devotions with you after the summer break.
