Grow spiritually

I’m sure we all have different ways in which we spend time with God. But the time we spend in God’s presence must help us to grow in our spiritual relationship with Him.

Here’s some of my thoughts on what to do to ensure your quiet time helps us.

    Why?

Why do you want to spend time with God? Are you just doing it because it’s what’s expected of you, or do you actually want to spend time in God’s presence?

God wants us to spend time in quiet contemplation and prayer, but we must want to do it, or that time is pointless.

    When?

If you’re anything like me, you will say you’ll do some thing later, but then never actually get round to it. Don’t let your time with God fall into this category. Instead set a specific time each day that suits you to spend time in quietness and prayer with God.

One piece of advise, don’t make that time just before you go to bed, as you’ll not be at your best, and may doze off! Instead make your quiet time with God at a time you are bright and alert. Fit other things around your quiet time, instead of fitting your quiet time around other things.

    Where?

It’s important to choose a location at is condusive to spending time in quiet prayer with God. i.e. Don’t make your quiet place a place where other people are around, or where you may be interrupted. Instead make sure your quiet place is somewhere where you can be alone without interruptions, without other noises that may distract you. Make your quiet place a special place for you and God.

    What?

I like to have my iPad with me, to I can refer to an online bible, and take notes, as well as listen to music – I tend to have specific music that I like to listen to during my quiet time with God.

I hope you find those suggestion helpful as you prepare to spend time in quietness with God. I’d love to hear what you do to help you in your quiet times with God.
