School holiday week

This week was the October school holiday week for school children throughout Scotland. It’s a week that I always quite enjoy working for various reasons, and this week has lived up to my usual expectations:

  • The roads are always much quieter, so journey times to/from the office are quicker than normal.
  • Parking at work is never quite as busy as it normally is.
  • Lots of people at work are on annual leave, so there’s usually much fewer meetings to attend.
  • With fewer meetings, it always seems that I manage to get lots of, what I would call, ‘real work’ done, just for a change!

All in all it’s been a productive week for me at work. I even managed to find time to write some User Stories for a new project my team need to deliver in the near future. I should maybe highlight that I used to spend much of my time writing User Stories, and deigning solutions, but these days in my current role, it’s not something I often have time to do.

Gathering system requirements and designing solutions was always something I liked doing, as I loved seeing the end result – a fit for purpose solution that the users or customers could use to help them do their job easier or allow them to request services from the organisation. As I’ve already said, this isn’t something I get much opportunity to do these days, as this isn’t really my role anymore, however due to current circumstances and workload, it’s been helpful that I managed to write some user stories this week, so that we could move forward with that project, while others are off.

Next week, when the school holidays are over, things will return to normal – days full of meetings, and probably little time to write any further user stories (requirements)….back to normal!
