We hear loads of negative news or stories these days of everything that’s wrong with society these days – The mindless violence seen in our streets; the abuse and insults hurled at others because they look different to them, have different beliefs, or just because…
So given all this, how can we still believe in the humanity of other people? It can be difficult can’t it?
It’s therefore good to hear a good news story for a change, so I thought I’d share an experience I had this week that refreshed my belief in others – Earlier this week after I finished work I went round to a couple of our local shops to get some food. I was only in the two shops for a few minutes and was back home well within 30 minutes.
Now you’ll be wondering why I’m telling you this as so far nothing unusual has happened. However my experience only happened about 30-40 minutes after I got home when our phone rang – This in itself is unusual as most family and friends tend to call our mobiles rather than our landline – It was a mobile number that was calling, but not one I recognised, so when I answered I was expecting to find it was either a wrong number or a cold-caller. I was wrong.
Firstly the person asked if I was ‘Dorothy’, to which I gave my usual response to a caller I don’t know who asks that question – ‘Who’s calling?’. To cut the story a bit shorter, it turns out the caller lived locally and had been I one of the shops that I had been in earlier. While in there, they spotted a medical card, with my details lying on the floor. They had taken a note of my details and were now contacting me now they had returned home. The guy informed me he’d handed my card to one of the people working in the shop, but felt because it was a medical card, and had my details on it that he should let me know.
Wow! I was rather taken aback by the call, mainly because I hadn’t even realised I’d lost my card, but also because this guy had taken the time to actually contact me and let me know he’d found my card.
I went back round to the shop that I had apparently dropped my card in, and was able to reunite myself with my medical card. When I got back home, I send the guy that had called me a text to thank him for letting me know he’d found my card, and to let him know that because of his kindness I now had my card back.
My faith in humanity was restored!
