If your brother or sister sins, go and point out their fault, just between the two of you. If they listen to you, you have won them over.
Matthew 18:15 (NIV)
When I read this verse in Matthew’s gospel the other night, I was reminded of a conversation I had with someone recently – We were talking about how when we point out other peoples’ faults, by either physically pointing the finger at someone, or metaphorically doing so.
It was a good reminder to me that day, that while it might be easy sometimes to point our other peoples faults and failing, that I should remember that I have more than enough faults of my own that I should deal with before I even consider pointing a finger at other peoples’ mistakes.
As the bible verse I read reminds us, it is good to help others sort out and fix their faults, but we must do it in a way that helps them realise we want to help them, not just point a finger at them.
So today, I encourage you to help others and encourage others to resolve their faults or failings, but only do so once you identify and try to resolve your own failings.
