Just why?

Things happen in life that make us question why they happen. More specifically, they make us question why God lets these things happen.

This has never been more apparent, than last week when Liverpool and Portuguese footballer Diogo Jota (aged 28), and his brother Andre Silva (aged 25) were killed when their car crashed last week.

There was a great outpouring of disbelief, love, and sympathy for the family and friends of the brothers following their deaths. My attention was caught by one particular report that I read, which was from Jurgen Klopp the previous Liverpool manager. Here’s what the story said.

Klopp reacted to the tragic news on Instagram, paying tribute to a ‘great friend’ and ‘fantastic player’.

‘This is a moment where I struggle! There must be a bigger purpose! But I can’t see it,’ Klopp wrote.

‘I’m heartbroken to hear about the passing of Diogo and his brother Andre.

‘Diogo was a not only a fantastic player, but also a great friend, a loving and caring husband and father! We will miss you so much!

‘All my prayers, thoughts and power to Rute, the kids, the family, the friends and everyone who loved them!

‘Rest in peace – Love J

Jurgen Klopp has been very public about being a christian. It struck me that in this situation Klopp, as a christian was vocalising those fears and weaknesses that we all feel sometimes – he admitted he was questioning why God let these two young men die when they had great futures ahead of them.

My thoughts were really focused on the fact that even though we sometimes question God, it’s not a sign of weakness in us – it is in fact a sign that we are human, and as such even though we trying to be more like Christ and put our full trust in God, we still fall short of that. I pray today that we may each continue to be more like Christ, so that we may put our trust in God no matter what happens in life.
