A quiet place

Earlier today on Bellshill Salvation Army Band’s Facebook page I shared some devotions. I’d like to share those devotions with you tonight.

The world we live in can feel like a daunting and scary place at times. There’s war and conflict going on between many nations; There’s natural disasters occurring before our eyes in many countries; There are people starving and homeless all over the world. Meanwhile we find ourselves rushing around from one place to another, hardly stopping to acknowledge those we encounter during our day.

We therefore need to stop, take a breath, and focus on who and what is important to us. We need to find our ‘quiet place’ – A place where we can talk to God and hear Him speaking to us without any distractions; A place where we can find a balance between our spiritual life and our ‘doing’ life; A place where we come close to God.

To help you find your quiet place today we share ‘Quietude’ (Harold Burgmayer) played by the Canadian Staff Band. It features the hymn tune Repton. The words we associate with this music are from a poem by John Greenleaf Whittier that we normally use as the third and fourth verses of the song ‘Dear Lord and Father of Mankind’.

Drop thy still dews of quietness
Till all our strivings cease;
Take from our souls the strain and stress,
And let our ordered lives confess
The beauty of thy peace.

Breathe through the heats of our desires
Thy coolness and thy balm;
Let sense be dumb, let flesh retire;
Speak through the earthquake, wind and fire,
O still small voice of calm!
