A dark place

There’s a place inside all of us that few people talk about. It’s a ‘dark place’. Do you know what I mean by that? Have you ever been, or are you currently in a ‘dark place’?

The ‘dark place’ is not actually a physical location that has no light. It’s an emotional state that we can sometimes find ourselves feeling there’s no hope in our future. Do you recognise those feelings?

When we’re in that place, our mind is not our friend, as it tries to convince us that you’re a burden, that you can’t do anything right, that sense of dread is unbearable, a deep sadness surrounds you, and you feel that things will never get better. That’s when you may find you just want to be yourself, so you withdraw from socialising with others and lose interest in self-care and your hobbies.

When you feel like this, finding a way out can feel impossible. However, if we accept we are in a ‘dark place’ right now instead of fighting it, that is a very good first step to take.

Each day, look for some small things that give positivity, even if you don’t feel positive. On the darkest days, look for small things that show positivity, peace or light. Take a note of those moments of ‘light’ that you see, so you can remember them on your darkest days to try and bring just a little bit of positivity to your life again.

Lifting yourself out of a ‘dark place’ doesn’t have a definable timescales, as we’re all different. You will have good days and bad days, and that’s okay. The most important thing is that you don’t beat yourself up about how you’re feeling, but instead show yourself compassion, reminding yourself that your current situation is temporary.

Just as the sun is always shining, even though you may not always see it because the clouds are blocking it from your site, so your life is the same – you may be experiencing cloudy, stormy says just now, but a brighter, positive future is still possible, even though it doesn’t feel like it just now.

The most important thing to remember right now is that you are not alone, and although things look unbearable just now, this is just a temporary state for you.

After the darkness there is always dawn.

The night is always darkest before the dawn
The dawn, bringing hope, bringing light,
bringing joy to open our hearts and strengthen our souls.
After the night the sun will shine.
The night will end and the sun will rise!
The night is always darkest before the dawn.
