More than just on a Sunday

There’s a danger in our faith when a Sunday morning is the only time we engage with God – We dress for Church, sing the songs, play the music, nod at what’s said in the sermon, and then step into the new week as if nothing sacred happened. Jesus didn’t call us to be one-day-a-week Christians. He called us to follow Him daily, to carry our cross, and to let His light shine through every moment of our lives.

Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it.

Luke 9:23-24 (NIV)

The word daily is the word I want to highlight in these verses. It doesn’t say weekly, or occasionally. It says daily. It’s in all our mundane tasks, such as doing the dishes, washing the clothes, driving home from work, and in the quiet moments before you go to bed that our discipleship is tested and when it’s refined.

Being more than a Sunday Christian means:

  • Praying when no one’s watching.
  • Choosing grace when anger feels easier.
  • Speaking the truth even when it’s unpopular.
  • Loving the difficult people.
  • Letting scripture shape your decisions, not just your emotions.

It’s not about perfection. It’s about presence. God’s presence in us, and our presence with Him throughout the week.

The song ‘Make Room’ by Community Music gives us a gentle but powerful invitation to surrender every part of our lives to Jesus. One line in particular that echos this is.

Here is where I lay it down, every burden, every crown…

It’s a reminder that faith isn’t confined to a sanctuary. It’s meant to saturate our homes, our workplaces, our relationships. i.e. in every room of our lives.

This coming week, I challenge you to ask yourself: Where is Jesus in my Monday? My Wednesday? My Saturday night and every other day of the week? Make sure you Invite Him in. Let your faith breathe beyond the church service on a Sunday morning and out into your every day life.
