We can’t always choose what happens to us. But we can choose how we respond.
The last of human freedoms — the ability to choose one’s attitude in a given set of circumstances.
Viktor E. Frankl
Frankl’s words echo Paul’s encouragement in Romans 12:2 to “be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” So our attitude, our posture toward life, becomes a spiritual practice.
Choosing gratitude doesn’t deny pain. Choosing hope doesn’t ignore reality. Choosing joy doesn’t erase sorrow. However each choice opens a window for God’s light to enter.
Your circumstances may be fixed, but your attitude is not, and sometimes the smallest shift in perspective becomes the biggest step toward freedom and our ability to enhance our attitude to every circumstance we encounter.
There’s a song called ‘Yet Not I But Through Christ In Me’ by CityAlight is a really good fit for this blog post, as it is a good reminder about choosing a Christ‑centred life, by allowing ourselves to be shaped by Christ’s strength, not our own.
